Travis Tritt and special guest Jerry Douglas to appear in Shenandoah Valley

Don’t miss this show. Saturday, September 5, 2009, right before Labor Day, Travis Tritt and special guest star Jerry Douglas will bring an evening of acoustic music to the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival (SVMF).
Two musical giants with 14 Grammy awards between them are combining their efforts for a special evening of acoustic sound at the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival in Orkney Springs on September 5 at 7 p.m. Country music star Travis Tritt and his friend Jerry Douglas will make a rare appearance together to open the final weekend of the Festival, a summertime mid-Atlantic region tradition.
Travis Tritt has sold more than 25 million albums and earned two Grammy Awards and three County Music Association awards over the course of his career. On his newest album, “The Storm,” he collaborates with musical greats including Charlie Daniels, Richard Marx and blues guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Tritt and American Idol’s Randy Jackson have teamed up to produce a collection of songs that embrace everything that Tritt loves about music.
His musical influences are across the map. Growing up just outside of Atlanta, he had the Grand Ole Opry to the north in Nashville, Macon, Ga., to the south, which is home to The Allman Brothers and the Marshall Tucker Band, and to the west there is the Mississippi delta, home to the Delta blues. He grew up listening to all of this music and his soulful vocal styles still reflect those varied influences.
Jerry Douglas is the Dobro player for Alison Krauss and Union Station, with whom he has toured extensively and released platinum albums since 1998. He has also recorded with artists, such as Garth Brooks, Ray Charles, Emmylou Harris, Reba McEntire, Dolly Parton, Paul Simon, Ricky Skaggs, James Taylor, Randy Travis, and Trisha Yearwood. Douglas has been named Musician of the Year by both the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association. He began as a bluegrass musician at the age of sixteen and has experimented with other genres such as jazz, country, Indian, classical, Hawaiian, Celtic, Dixieland, gospel, and blues.
The two, friends for more than two decades, play together infrequently. They did a handful of shows earlier this year, but the SVMF show is the only one scheduled for the rest of the year. Both have musical commitments elsewhere and they can’t get together much, Festival Executive Director Dennis Lynch said. “We’re very fortunate to have them,” he added. “These are two great musicians and the show will fit in beautifully with the Orkney Springs venue.”
The Festival venue is a rustic pavilion on the grounds of the old Orkney Springs Hotel, now part of the Shrine Mont Camp and Conference Center in Orkney Springs, Va., about 13 miles west of Mount Jackson. The hotel is a National Historic Landmark.
Reserved pavilion tickets are $40 and general admission lawn tickets are $35. The concerts go on rain or shine. Visit the SVMF website or call (800) 459-3396 for tickets or more information.
