Shenandoah Valley experiencing closings and delays due to blizzard

Shenandoah Valley, VA – Governor Kaine has declared a state of emergency in Virginia. Due to the snowstorm, here are the closings, cancellations and delays we have gathered thus far for the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. We will be posting the latest information as we receive it.

The Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport – in Weyers Cave, VA is reporting that the airport is open, however there are no flights going in and out. They are attempting to clear runways now. This information is as of 12:49 p.m. on Saturday, December 19.

Latest VDOT Accident Reports –

Augusta County – On US-11 (Lee-Jackson Hwy) in the County of Augusta, in the vicinity of the ramp to I-81N, motorists can expect potential delays due to a tractor trailer accident. The south left lane and right lane are closed. As of 12/19/2009 12:40:26

Rockbridge County – On I-81 at mile marker 188 in the County of Rockbridge, motorists can expect major delays due to a disabled vehicle. The south left lane and right lane are closed. Traffic backups are approximately 5.0 miles. A detour has been established at Exit 191 to direct traffic on to US-11 South and back to I-81 South at Entrance 168. As of 12/19/2009 11:53:41

    VDOT Update:
    Location:Fauquier (County) – On I-66 at mile marker 14.8 in the County of Fauquier, motorists can expect potential delays due to a disabled vehicle. The west left lane and right lane are closed. As of 12/19/2009 14:16:25

    in Winchester, VA – Snow update – closings and cancellations – Apple Blossom Mall opened this morning., but by noon has closed.

    Additional closures and cancellations for Winchester, Va area:

    - AA District 26 Workshop scheduled for 12/20/09 – cancelled
    - Apple Club Christmas Party is cancelled this evening
    - Grace Lutheran Church in Winchester, Va.- 8:15 am Service and Sunday School have been cancelled for Sunday, December 20
    - Rubbermaid Commercial Products – closed from 6pm Saturday to 6pm Sunday
    - The Wayside Theater in Middletown, Va.- Miracle on 34th Street; 2:30 & 7:30pm shows cancelled

    12/18/09 – In Charlottesville, Va – Sports update – Tonight’s Virginia vs. UNC-Wilmington men’s basketball game at John Paul Jones Arena has been postponed because of hazardous travel conditions caused by the heavy snowfall in the Charlottesville area. The schools will try to reschedule the game during the 2009-10 season.

    Snow related cancellations and closures in Loundoun County, VA –

    - Loudoun County Public Schools will be closed Monday, December 21 and Tuesday, December 22, due to inclement weather. All administrative offices will be closed on Monday, December 21.
    - The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority reports Green Line
    Disruption between Fort Totten and Congress Heights in both directions. All above ground Metrorail service has been suspended due to inclement weather.

    12/19/09 – Reporting from the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia –

    The Washinton Post web site is reporting the following snow-related travel infomration:

    Major road closures in Virginia
    The Virginia Department of Transportation reports several closures on major roadways and some ramps, because of deteriorating travel conditions and accidents. The department continues to urge drivers to stay off the roads.

    VDOT says these roads are blocked because of snow-related incidents:
    – Southbound I-495 at Braddock Road
    – Northbound I-95 south of Lorton
    – Northbound I-95 south of Quantico

    Virginia State Police have closed these ramps because of icing:
    – Westbound I-495 to southbound I-95
    – Northbound I-95 to northbound I-495
    – Franconia Road (Route 644) to southbound I-95

    Delays building for Amtrak
    Update (1;05 p.m.): Amtrak is reporting 30 to 60 minutes delays on the corridor between Washington and Boston, spokeswoman Vernae Graham said.

    Amtrak was reporting greater delays of more than two hours on long-distance trains along the East Coast, including the Crescent, which runs from New Orleans to New York and the Palmetto, which runs between New York and Savannah, Ga.
