Fun activities abound in Clarke County, Virginia in January

Shenandoah Valley – Out of Berryville, Virginia, comes this information  from in-the-know resident Susi Bailey about fun activities in and around Clarke County, VA – for all ages – during the month of January 2010:

- Friday January 1 – “Boyce Fire Company Bingo – 7:00 PM.  For more information,  call 540-837-1228.

- Saturday January 2 – “John Landis” John and his sweet country voice will be performing at the Horseshoe Curve Restaurant. 1162 Pine Grove Road, in Pine Grove. For more information, call: 540-554-8291.

- Monday January 4 – Monday January 11 – The “Locke Store” will be closed. It will re-open again on  Jan. 12..

- Friday January 8 – “Hank and Friends” Rock and Roll will be at the Horseshoe Curve Restaurant. 1162 Pine Grove Road, in Pine Grove. For more information,  call: 540-554-8291

- Saturday January 9 – The VHSA Hunter Show will be presented at Oak Hill Equestrian Center” – at 8:00 AM. 14986 Lord Fairfax Highway, White Post, Virginia. For more information,  call: 888-949-1310 or 540-837-3000, or visit their website.

- Saturday January 9 – Special Missouri Harmony Singing (and first hour of Singing from the Sacred Harp) – 4 to 8 PM – at Berryville Baptist Church (On Rt 340, go 1 block north of Main Street (business Rt. 7) and 1 block west (left) on Academy Street, Berryville VA. Potluck dinner at 6:00 PM. (No oven use.)  For more information,  call 540-955-2660.

- Saturday January 9 through Saturday March 13 –Students can become young naturalists at Blandy Winter Program – Students in Grades 1 to 5 can earn a Young Naturalist Certificate in a series of five Saturday programs beginning Saturday January 9 at Blandy Experimental Farm on Route 50 in Clarke County. The 2010 Young Naturalist Program is presented by the Foundation of the State Arboretum, and sponsored by The Adams Companies. Students can participate in one or two programs, or all five.

Those who attend at least four programs will receive a Young Naturalist certificate.  Each program is offered on two Saturdays, giving participants a choice of dates. The first program, offered Saturday January 9 and Saturday January 16, looks at Signs of Winter.  Other dates and topics include Birds of Blandy, Saturday January 23 and Saturday January 30; Skulls and Skeletons, Saturday February 6 and Saturday February 13; Animal Adaptations, Saturday February 20 and Saturday February 27; and Signs of Spring, Saturday March 6 and Saturday March 13. Grades 1-2 attend from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM; Grades 3-5 attend from 12:30 PM to 3 PM.

The cost is $20 per session ($17 per session for members of the Foundation of the State Arboretum).  Parents may register and pay in advance for four or more programs for the same child, or for two or more children for the same program, and the cost drops to $18 per session ($15 for FOSA members). - Friday January 15 – Camino Real and Scandia DJ’s are going to start a monthly “Teen Night” at Camino Real – located at 16 Crow Street, in downtown Berryville. People ages 11 -17 are welcome to attend. It will take place from 6:00 to 9:00 PM.  This is a chance for teens (middle/high schoolers) to have a little “nightlife”in  Berryville.. As an incentive, prents also receive 25 percent off their tab for the evening. For more information, call 540-955-4730.

- Wednesday January 20 – Clarke County Hay Auction -  Gates open at 9:00 AM. Growers/sellers must arrive by 9:30 AM. The auction begins at 10:00 AM.  Hash Auction Center is located at 632 E Main Street Berryville, VA.  This event is sponsored by the Clarke County Economic Development Advisory Committee, the Clarke County Equine Alliance, the Forum for Rural Innovation, and the Virginia Cooperative Extension.
