Dr. Tom Iden to be honored by Boy Scouts at fundraiser dinner

Clarke County, VA – The Mannahoac District, Boy Scouts of America (BSA), announces that Thomas C. Iden, MD,  is being honored as the 2010 Clarke County Distinguished Citizen.

Betty Weller, Assistant Vice President and Branch Manager at Bank of Clarke County, is chairing this event.

Betty and her team of volunteers are busy organizing the Clarke County Distinguished Citizen Award Dinner honoring Dr. Tom. The dinner will be held on Tuesday, March 16 at 7pm at Enders Fire Hall in Berryville, VA.  The purpose of the dinner is to honor an outstanding citizen of Clarke County and to raise the necessary funds so that Scouting may continue to grow and offer a quality program to the youth of Clarke County. Last year DCA recipient was Jack Hardesty with over $14,000 raised for Scouting.

Dr.  Tom Iden was born in Berryville, Virginia on September 21, 1919, the son of Jane and Dr. Carroll Iden.  He joined the Boy Scouts at age 11 in 1930.  He participated as a Scout for four years, obtaining the rank of Second Class Scout.  As an adult, Dr. Tom served as Cubmaster for his son; Tom’s pack in the early 1950’s and has supported the Scouting movement financially for many years.

Dr. Tom has been a lifetime servant to both his country and community. He served in the US Navy, president of the Virginia State Board of Health, Chaired the Clarke County School Board Selection Committee, and chaired the Winchester Star Leadership Committee. He was inducted into the Clarke County High School Hall of Fame as a result of serving as team physician for 20 years.

Dr. Tom is a member of Duncan United Methodist Church, the American Legion, a charter member of the local chapter of Military Officers of America, Phi Chi Medical Fraternity, Chi Beta Phi honorary scientific fraternity, and the Kappa Sigma social fraternity.

Dr.  Tom married the love of his life, the former Mae Oglesby Tench, with whom he spent 64 happily married years until her death in early 2009.  Together they had four children: Jean, Tom, John, and Alex. Jean and her husband, Dodge  live in Atlanta, GA;  Tom and his wife, Susie live in Winchester, VA; John lives in Dayton, VA; and Alex and his wife, Stacey live in Winchester, VA.

The Mannahoac District, organized in 2002 covers Clarke County and Jefferson County in West Virginia. They have earned the National Quality District Award six of the last eight years. Currently over 900 youth call themselves Scouts with over 300 adults serving as leaders in the Mannahoac District.
