Earth – What in the world is happening lately? Want to gain some “newly-found” insights on the way the world operates and your role in it? How our collective past meets future in the evolving moment?

The Gnostic Gospel of Thomas reveals Jesus’ words on the Kingdom of God. You could say that it’s God’s “Back to the Future,” or perhaps God’s Return of the Beginning.

Jesus says: “You see, the end will be where the beginning is. Congratulations to the one who stands at the beginning: that one will know the end and will not taste death.”

The Nag Hammadi Library, a collection of thirteen ancient codices containing over fifty texts, was discovered in upper Egypt in 1945. This important discovery includes a large number of primary Gnostic scriptures – texts once thought to have been entirely destroyed during the early Christian struggle to define “orthodoxy” – scriptures such as the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Philip, and the Gospel of Truth. The leather-bound codices found at Nag Hammadi in 1945.

The discovery and translation of the Nag Hammadi library, completed in the 1970s, has provided impetus to a major re-evaluation of early Christian history, and “newly-found” insights into what Jesus thought and taught – particularly about the Kingdom of God. The text provides truth for those of all faiths. Many who meditate on Jesus’ words here begin to get a clearer understanding of what he was and is saying.

Many scholars have pointed to Thomas as the twin of Jesus. In the Gospel of Thomas, Jesus comments on the roles of James the Just and Mary Magdalene.

Three (3) other insights from the Gospel of Thomas include:

- Jesus said, “Those who seek should not stop seeking until they find. When they find, they will be disturbed. When they are disturbed, they will marvel, and will reign over all. [And after they have reigned they will rest.]”

- The disciples said to Jesus, “We know that you are going to leave us. Who will be our leader?” Jesus said to them, “No matter where you are you are to go to James the Just, for whose sake heaven and earth came into being.”

- Jesus said, “Look, I will guide her (Mary) to make her male, so that she too may become a living spirit resembling you males. For every female who makes herself male will enter the kingdom of Heaven.”

*****

To gain insights, read the full text of the Gospel of Thomas on our blog at:

*****

On Friday, August 13 at 8:00 p.m., the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival presents Mary Chapin Carpenter, with special guest, Boston-based Catie Curtis.

Catie Curtis

Ms. Carpenter developed a following on Washington D.C.’s folk scene in the early 1980s and she’s been in the national spotlight ever since.

She has 12 albums to her credit, has sold more than 13 million records, has won five Grammy Awards, and has reached the top-10 on the charts a dozen times. On her current tour, Carpenter is promoting her latest album, “The Age of Miracles,” which was released in April.

The New Yorker called Catie Curtis “a folk rock goddess.” Other music critics also praise her work. “With a clear, deceptively gentle voice, she can turn on a dime and thrill the listener with unforeseen power and emotion,” RollingStone.com says.

*****

The Saw Doctors, the well-known band from Galway, Ireland, will perform in Orkney Springs, Va., on Saturday, August 14 at 8:00 p.m.

It is the band’s first appearance at the Festival in Orkney Springs. The band holds the record for having the most successful single of all time on the Irish charts, with its 1990 hit, “I Uesta Lover,” that spent nine-weeks in the top slot.

They charted number one for as recently as October, 2008. Some compare The Saw Doctors to Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band. Their songs are blue collar, about real life, hard work, and everyman all rendered in great poetic detail. They are a group full of personality that always leaves audiences satisfied.

The Festival venue is a rustic pavilion on the grounds of the Shrine Mont Camp and Conference Center in Orkney Springs, Va., about 13 miles west of Mount Jackson. The hotel is a National Historic Landmark. Reserved pavilion tickets for the Mary Chapin Carpenter show are $45 and general admission lawn tickets are $40. For The Saw Dotors show, reserved pavilion tickets are $32 and general admission lawn tickets are $27. The concerts go on rain or shine.

Shining Our Light Across the Nation

On Saturday, July 31, 2010, at 8 p.m. EST, the Scouting family — past, present and future — will be able to take part, in a special nationwide broadcast. A Shining Light Across America will bring the Centennial Celebration Show from the 100th Anniversary National Scout Jamboree in Fort AP Hill, Va. to communities across the country via Webcast and satellite transmission.

As part of this monumental event, local council, district, unit, and other Scouting groups across America will gather in venues large and small — whether a camp, community center, or a sports stadium — to host their own local activities leading up to the Shining Light broadcast.

The Boy Scouts are encouraging everyone to take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the magic that has marked 100 years of the Boy Scouts of America. Members of the entire community at large – Scouts, Scouting volunteers, alumni, families and community supporters – are invited to join in the festivities.

The 100th Anniversary Centennial Celebration Show will shine a light on the Boy Scouts’ rich heritage, core values and their role in shaping America’s
youth.

Shenandoah Valley Centennial Details

In the words of organizers, here’s the scoop on festivities here in the Shenandoah Valley:

“If there is an event and a moment in our 100th Anniversary Celebration not to be missed, this is it! And (while it soon will be) it is still not too late to involve the Scouts, Scouters, units, friends, families, and supporters of
your council in the July 31, 2010, broadcast of the jamboree’s Centennial Celebration show, A Shining Light Across America.

The opportunity for your entire Scouting family to participate in this event is historic. And, the Centennial Celebration show will be spectacular. Here are the details:

1. Arena show and broadcast schedule - The Centennial Celebration preshow will be available via satellite and online starting at 5:30 p.m. EDT on July 31, 2010. The main show will be available for viewing at 8 p.m. EDT, and the broadcast will conclude at approximately 10:30 p.m. EDT.

By popular request, we’ve provided an overview of the Centennial Celebration show “run of show.” Please Note: Content and timing are subject to change, all the way to showtime.

2. Webcast update - The Shining Light webcast will be available worldwide on UStream,TV and via the “Shining Light” tab on the BSA’s Facebook page. Viewers will be able to comment and interact with fellow webcast participants while watching. Councils can also embed the viewing screen into their own Web site, Facebook page, and elsewhere.

(Click on “embed codes” at the top of the www.ustream.tv/shininglight page to copy the code for “Live Show” that you can paste into the HTML of your page.)

Reminder: To ensure the best picture quality, the webcast option is recommended for small- to medium-sized groups on a screen no larger than 120 inches (9 feet wide by 6 feet high). Be sure to test it now by projecting any of the live videos currently available on Ustream onto the screen you plan to use. For more, review the webcast guidelines on the Boy Scouts of America web site. ”

100th Anniversary National Scout Jamboree begins July 25 with parade in Washington D.C. (Update: see link below.)

And, in this 100th Anniversary Year, the Boy Scouts are getting ready for their best National Scout Jamboree ever. The Jamboree truly reflects the true spirit of Scouting — including physical fitness, environmental conservation, and national heritage. Adventure waits around every corner with rappelling, scuba diving, kayaking, rafting, sailing, archery, trails, and more.

This year, thanks to generous support from AT&T, the Exclusive Communications Services Sponsor of the Boy Scouts of America, the jamboree will have a communications network like never before so laptops are welcome.

Many individuals, families, and units will be making their way through the nation’s capital en route to the Jamboree. In honor of the Centennial, there will be more for Scouts to do than ever before.

Make plans to participate in one of these exciting events … and spread the word. In their own words, here are all of the events happening in conjunction with the Jamboree this year.

BSA Grand Centennial Parade (July 25, 2010)

“Not since the first jamboree in 1937 has there been a Scout-specific parade in Washington, D.C. We’ll have floats, balloons, marching bands, vintage vehicles, great entertainment, flags, and fun. Join us at 1 p.m. on Constitution Avenue. Learn more at www.boyscouts-ncac.org/parade .

Adventure Base 100 (July 23 – Aug 8, 2010)

If you haven’t seen it yet, you don’t want to miss our interactive, traveling Scouting experience. Ropes course, Scouting museum, IMAX-like movie, digital exhibits, and more! Pre-register for campus activities at
www.adventurebase100.org .

ScoutQuest (July 24 – 25, 2010)

Uncover the links between Scouting and American culture in this interactive, citywide, high-tech hunt. More information to come, but there are great prizes and fun spots to visit, including several Smithsonian museums.

National Hall of Leadership Induction (July 25, 2010)

Join us at Adventure Base 100 after the Grand Centennial Parade as we honor four inductees to the National Hall of Leadership, representative of our nationwide honorees. Emceed by Distinguished Eagle Scout Ernest Green , this inspirational ceremony is not to be missed.

Scouting Stamp First-Day-of-Issue (July 27, 2010)

Jamboree participants and visitors can join a special dedication ceremony for the Scouting stamp to be issued nationwide by the U.S. Postal Service. BSA and USPS leadership, along with other special guests, will come together to recognize this honor. All who attend will receive one-of-a-kind collectibles commemorating this important day.

Scout Family Day (July 24, 2010)

The Smithsonian American Art Museum is providing a host of activities for Boy and Girls Scouts to enjoy. Come by for crafts, entertainment, activities, and games.

National Archives – From the Vaults: 100 Years of the Boy Scouts

The National Archives is offering early entrance hours for Scouts in uniform and their families July 23-25. On July 26, 29, and 30, the Archives will show “From the Vaults: 100 Years of the Boy Scouts.”

*****

Then, on July 31, 2010, from Fort A. P. Hill, Virginia, the Jamboree will begin in earnest with the Centennial Celebration Show – A Shining Light Across America – broadcast around the world via satellite and webcast (see details above).

Edinburg, VA – Felix and Oscar are alive and well, and so is Community Theater in the Shenandoah Valley. It enriches the lives of cast and audience members alike at every turn.

Just a reminder that auditions for Theater Shenandoah’s Fall production of the Neil Simon play, The Odd Couple, are scheduled for next weekend – Saturday July 17 from 3:30 – 6 p.m., and Sunday, July 18 from 1 to 5 p.m. Under the direction of the Theater’s new Artistic Director, Michael Gwin, the auditions will be held at the Opera House, located at 107 Center Street in Edinburg VA, 22824 (less than a block from Main Street/ Route 11).

Here is a synopsis of all the characters in the Odd Couple to help you in the audition:

The Particulars

- What: The Odd Couple

- Auditions: Saturday July 17 from 3:30 – 6 p.m., and Sunday, July 18 from 1 to 5 p.m. at The Opera House (Sides will be provided)

- Rehearsals: July 24 – September 9 (Schedule based on actors availability)

- Performances: Friday, September 10 at p.m., Saturday, September 11 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, September 12 at 3 p.m.

Character Breakdown -

As written, there are 6 men and 2 women in the play (unless they decide to again use some non-traditional casting for some of the male characters).

Oscar Madison
Oscar Madison is the “messy” half of this famous “odd couple.” Oscar takes pity on his best friend, the newly separated and nearly suicidal Felix Ungar, and invites Felix to live with him in his New York City apartment. Within two weeks, however, Oscar regrets the invitation. The 43-year-old Oscar is carefree, pleasant, and very appealing as a character. When asked by one of the poker players what kind of sandwiches he’s serving,

Oscar looks under the bread and says, “I got brown sandwiches and green sandwiches.” The green, he says, is “either very new cheese or very old meat.” At the end of the play there is a suggestion that Oscar’s experience with Felix has provoked a change in his personality because Oscar’s last words in the play are an admonishment to the poker players to be less messy.

In both the original Broadway stage production in 1965 and in the movie version of 1968, Oscar was played by Walter Matthau. In the five-year television series beginning in 1970, Oscar was played by Jack Klugman.

Murray
Murray, one of the poker players, is a policeman and a methodical, even slow, thinker. He is also very gentle and caring, and demonstrates the most concern for Felix. Murray is fairly unflappable, but he is also a bit simple and naive.

Cecily Pigeon
Cecily Pigeon is a little more uninhibited than her sister, Gwendolyn; she is the one who makes such suggestive remarks as, “Oh, we’ve done spectacular things but I don’t think we’d want it spread all over the telly.”

Gwendolyn Pigeon
Though the Pigeon sisters seem almost indistinguishable, Simon describes Gwendolyn as the “mother hen.” Like her sister Cicely, Gwendolyn is in her 30s, British, attractive, and works as a secretary for the Slenderama Health Club. She is a little slower mentally than her sister — she has trouble remembering Felix’s name.

Roy
Roy is Oscar’s accountant and a man with an acute sense of smell. He is the poker player who complains most about air quality and bad odors in Oscar’s apartment. In the second act he storms from the game because the fastidious Felix has put disinfectant on the playing cards.

Speed
As his name implies, Speed is always in a hurry. He is the impatient poker player — sarcastic, complaining, and even a little mean. As the curtain rises on Murray shuffling the cards with agonizing slowness, the caustic Speed has the play’s sharp first line: “Tell me, Mr. Maverick, is this your first time on the riverboat?”

Felix Ungar
Felix Ungar is the “neat” member of the “odd couple,” originally played on Broadway by Art Carney (he also played the character Norton on the popular Jackie Gleason television comedy The Honeymooners ). In the movie, the role was rendered by Jack Lemmon, and in the television series Tony Randall portrayed Felix.

A 44-year-old news writer for CBS, Felix responds to his wife’s decision to end their marriage by considering suicide, but in Simon’s comic world, attempted suicide is funny rather than serious; the compulsively tidy Felix sends his suicide note to his wife in a telegram. Oscar claims that Felix’s problem is an obsession with control and urges Felix to “let loose” once in a while, to do something he “feels” like doing rather than always doing what he thinks he’s “supposed” to do.

At the end of the play, when Felix accepts the invitation from the Pigeon sisters to stay in their apartment, he is perhaps demonstrating a less conventional aspect of his personality.

Vinnie
Vinnie, the last of the poker players, is nervous and eccentric. At the initial poker game he is constantly checking his watch because he wants to leave early — he’s departing for a vacation in Florida (in July) the next morning.

Other Audition Notes: In the event that there are those who can’t make the auditions, auditions are by appointment only. For the auditions, everyone will read from the script. There will be a Theater Camp the week prior ton auditions, so Sides can be available for pick up at the Theater for those interested in picking them up ahead of time.

Here/hear is what five top astrologers have to say about the rare Total Solar Eclipse and New Moon which both happen this Sunday, following the line up of five planets that occurred on June 13, 2010 …

From your vantage point on Earth, what do you see and hear?

**In the Earth-Keepers newsletter, James Tyberonn explains:

“When a Total Solar Eclipse occurs on a New Moon, a very special energy of transformation occurs. On July 11, 2010 this will take place.

Are you ready? Take time for this day, and utilize its extraordinary potentials for the positive. Keep your energy intact, and do not allow emotions to fray, and indeed the temptation to become anxious or over react will be there.

The July 11 Total Solar Eclipse is a New Moon with an extremely tremendous impact. The Sun that gives us life and lights our path is joined briefly with the dark and mysterious qualities of the Moon. The Moon blocks the light of the Sun. In this moment of perceived darkness, spirituality and the psyche combine anew, beginning another cycle in the spiral of our personal development. Great openings and great closures can occur – great advancement or untoward downward spiral. It is up to you. This Eclipse is extremely meaningful. Don’t ignore it.”

**Astrologer Pat Paquette writes:

“The cardinal T-square between Saturn, Pluto, Uranus, and Jupiter continues to get closer, but as of the eclipse, Saturn remains in the final degree of mutable Virgo, so technically it’s not a cardinal T-square. I’m not sure how much of a distinction this is, but I’ve theorized that Saturn in Virgo has been a stabilizing influence — an advantage we’ll lose once the lord of time re-enters cardinal Libra on July 21. That’s when the T-square will be at peak power.

That said, events don’t necessarily happen when planetary alignments are exact. There can be lags of days, weeks, or months, and sometimes events happen in advance of the planetary marker. That certainly was the case in 1989, the last time we had anything resembling this year’s cardinal build-up. With Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune all in Capricorn, cardinal energies dominated the skies for much of that year.

I went back and looked at several charts for events in 1989, including the Exxon Valdez spill, Hurricane Hugo, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Loma Prieta earthquake, the protests in Tiananmen Square, and the collapse of the Hydro-Québec power grid due to a geomagnetic storm. None of these events occurred when the planets were in exact alignment, although some of them were pretty close. In some cases, key planets were on the Ascendant at the moment of the event.

What this tells us is that the changes could come at any moment. We know we’re in the hot zone, and so nothing that happens in the next two months should surprise us, no matter how unprecedented, extraordinary, or totally outside of human experience to date. We asked to come along on this journey, but we can’t control what happens once we’re on the trail.”

**Astrologer Gary Caton has these observations about the July 11th eclipse and their connection with time and light:

“As if there weren’t enough juice flowing through the cardinal signs — with four of the five outer planets currently transiting near the solstice and equinoctial points — we now begin a period where the Cancer archetype will be forced open, ejecting its inner contents and forcing all the world to become aware of the loss. This is because an eclipse is essentially a rip in the fabric of time, and the South Node (now in Cancer) suggests a loss.

To appreciate the power of an eclipse, it is useful to understand that time here on Earth is fractal. It is measured by the constant repetition of the primal alternations of darkness and light. This rhythm of dark/light is ingrained into our bodies and psyches.

When there is a disruption of this pattern, via an eclipse, the natural flow of the dark/light fractal is stopped in its tracks. There is darkness where there should be light. It is as if the Laws of our Universe are temporarily inverted. The world is stood on its head, specifically in terms of the archetype within which the eclipse is operating.

An eclipse occurs when there is a lunation near the lunar nodes — the place where the Moon crosses the path of the Sun or ecliptic. Astrologically, the lunar nodes have been called the head and tail of the dragon, for in myth it was a demonic serpent swallowing the heavenly orb. The North Node represents the head of the dragon, therefore something being taken in or ingested. The South Node or tail of the dragon represents something being released.

The South Node is now in the sign of Cancer. As a Cancer nation, it is hard not to remember the exodus of American celebrities and dignitaries that surrounded last summer’s solar eclipse at 29° Cancer. A partial list includes: Ed McMahon, Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, David Carradine, Karl Malden, Steve McNair, Walter Cronkite, Les Paul, and Eunice Kennedy Shriver. We lost Ted Kennedy on the day that Venus crossed the eclipse degree. It is almost as if a door was opened to the “other side” through which these souls were bound to exit. It should be noted that the release doesn’t always have to be destructive. (It can signal transformation, rather than death.)

When wondering what the coming eclipse will release, it is important to remember that eclipses happen in families or series; a new member emerges about every 18 years. This is the Saros cycle, first discovered by Babylonian astronomer/astrologers more than two millennium ago.

Solar eclipses with very similar characteristics repeat every 18 years, 11 days, 8 hours; these eclipses are then part of the same family or Saros series. Any two eclipses separated by one Saros (6,585.3 days) share very similar geometries. They occur at the same node with the Moon, at nearly the same distance from Earth, and at the same time of year.

The current eclipse belongs to Saros Series 146, the last two of which occurred in June 1992 and 1974. This series is made up of a total of 76 eclipses; the current July 11, 2010 eclipse is number 27 in the series. The family began on September 19, 1541. The first total eclipse in the series took place on May 29, 1938. The eclipse of June 30, 1992 was the longest total eclipse of the series and lasted 5 minutes and 21 seconds with a magnitude 1.0592. The July 11, 2010 eclipse is the 2nd longest of the series, lasting 5 minutes and 20 seconds with a magnitude 1.0580.

When we look at the birth chart for this series, we see a very powerful conjunction of Mars with Uranus in late Leo near the Persian Royal star Regulus. Certainly this series has recently seen its share of sudden dramatic reversals in fame and/or power, including Hitler in 1938, Elvis in 1956, Nixon in 1974, and the British Royal Family in 1992.”

**Astrologer Rob Tillett makes these observations about the Cardinal Climax – a once-in-a-lifetime development between 2009 and 2012 – that he says will “retune the collective unconscious, redirecting social imperatives.”

The Cardinal Climax phase that is forming in the heavens, climaxing this year on July 31, 2010, is a rare occurrence indeed – one which will have powerful effects upon the world and those who dwell therein. It makes intense contacts with the US chart, the UK chart, the EC (European Community, now the European Union) chart, the Federal Reserve chart and the UN chart — not to mention the Australia chart.

The FIFA World Cup in South Africa has been positioned right across the eclipse cycle (June 11 – July 11), with the last day of the contest being on the day of the Solar Eclipse.

Let’s look at these aspects individually. The most immediately striking thing is the conjunction of the Moon with Pluto, with the Sun conjunct Mercury in opposition at the time of the eclipse. In addition to the stress inherent in the Full Moon and Lunar Eclipse, the conjunction of the Moon and Pluto awakens very powerful, strong-willed emotions and intense feelings.

The Sun in opposition gives difficulties with obstacles from those whose egos are threatened by situations in which power and control are paramount. Political disputes and social revolutions threaten danger and destruction. The common people (the Moon, Saturn) will be inclined to overthrow or resist their rulers (Sun, Jupiter) who will seek to control and repress them, even while offering blandishments and concessions.

Saturn is rising in Virgo, so the military will be ready to take control in trouble spots. These are likely to be in Europe, where tinder-boxes are crackling, thanks to the financial crisis. The eclipse angles are exactly superimposed upon the chart of the European Community, so Saturn (restriction, control, sorrow, karma, the past, the masses) is rising exactly conjunct the EC ascendant.

This chart is very heavily stressed in weeks ahead by the Solar Eclipse and then the Cardinal Climax. Greece’s chart too is heavily stressed by the eclipses and the 1974 chart also has Moon conjunct Pluto. This is not to say that other areas will not be affected. For example, Thailand is already more than crackling with political violence, and its significant that the eclipse Moon and Pluto fall exactly upon the ascendant of King Phumiphon Adunyadet (who is currently very ill in hospital), while eclipse Mars (violence) is exactly square his natal Saturn (common people) and eclipse Saturn is exactly opposed to his natal Uranus (disruption;catastrophe). Astrologically, the chart of the ruler always indicates developments in the nation, when activated. The Solar Eclipse also violently activates his chart, but enough of that.

Each of us will experience these stresses according to where the eclipse falls in our own charts, but stresses they will be! The Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn) will be most affected, especially if you were born early in the sign. There are a number of other notable aspects, the most intense being the opposition of Mercury and Pluto, so it may be we are so intent on exerting the force of our own thoughts that we refuse to listen, or that others attempt to manipulate our ideas to their advantage.

It just isn’t the best time for easy exchanges or free thinking. Information may be withheld as a form of paranoia or protection, or the wrong information is deliberately given in an effort to mislead. Jupiter and Saturn are the Great Chronocrators, or Time Lords, and their major aspects always mark important developments, with the opposition being the most cathartic.

The T-square of Sun/Mercury to Jupiter and Uranus opposing Saturn announces a major shift of social priorities, probably in a direction that has been unexpected by most. Traditional values are threatened or even overthrown in the chaos, which comes about through forces over which we have no personal control. Normal schedules or plans may be disrupted by the weather, war, or other forces in the environment. The good side is that we will be forced to create unorthodox responses that may prove valuable in the long term. We may also feel that we are asserting our freedom or independence in so doing.

We have to make choices here, and the sheer volume of information may become overwhelming. Don’t get swamped in the details, but be sure to check that the info on which you base your decision is accurate.”

** And finally, Jude Cowell on his Stars Over Washington blog adds:

“On July 11, 2010 there’s the Solar Eclipse with Scorpio (big business; betrayals and spying) rising with the midpoint of Saturn and Pluto, two of the main actors on 9/11/01 during their opposition.

Saturn/Pluto = ASC: concentration upon important matters; assessments of how to work with those in power; an environment that gives an impression of silent power or continuing influence; being placed in cumbersome or difficult circumstances; separation; melancholy; mourning or bereavement.

There is also 8th house involvement (Shared Resources, Debt, Credit, Insurance, Transformation, Death, the Occult) which relates to the Fixed Star Castor which is being triggered by the July 11, 2010 Solar Eclipse @ 19Can24, plus, ‘20Can/Cap are crisis or critical degrees.

Basically, 8th house crises are indicated yet the Solar Eclipse itself describes problems that at first seem worse, then clear with good outcomes… so don’t panic. The July 11 Eclipse is in the same Series (12S) as America’s Pre-Natal Eclipse Series (@ 00Pis34 in 1776, where Chiron transits now.)

That stock markets may be affected adversely by the July Solar Eclipse and by its herald, the June 26, 2010 Lunar Eclipse conjoining secretive Pluto in Saturn-ruled Capricorn, is a distinct possibility for Summer into Autumn 2010.

Even NASA is getting into the picture. They have created a special website just for eclipses. “On Sunday, 2010 July 11, a total eclipse of the Sun is visible from within a narrow corridor that traverses Earth’s southern Hemisphere. The path of the Moon’s umbral shadow crosses the South Pacific Ocean where it makes no landfall except for Mangaia (Cook Islands) and Easter Island (Isla de Pascua). The path of totality ends just after reaching southern Chile and Argentina. The Moon’s penumbral shadow produces a partial eclipse visible from a much larger region covering the South Pacific and southern South America.”

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Through an Executive Order, Governor Joe Manchin of West Virginia has proclaimed Friday, July 2, to be celebrated as a special day of observance in honor of U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd, and will give state employees the official day off.

“The governor truly hopes that this day off will allow state employees an opportunity to join him in honoring and celebrating the life of the state’s senior Senator,” says his aides.

West Virginians are invited to honor and celebrate the distinguished life of Sen. Byrd, with a public procession through Charleston, starting Thursday evening, July 1. Sen. Byrd will lie in repose at the state Capitol’s Lower Rotunda, from 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 1, 2010 until 9 a.m. on Friday, July 2, 2010, where the public is invited to pay their respects. A public, formal memorial service will also take place 11:30 a.m. on Friday, July 2, 2010 at the state Capitol’s North Plaza.

“This will be a beautiful service for a wonderful public servant,” said Manchin. “I invite all West Virginians to join us during this special day of remembrance and to celebrate the many accomplishments of this outstanding West Virginian.”

This Executive Order only applies to state government employees, including those who work at state colleges, such as Blue Ridge Community and Technical College. County employees also may take time off if the county commission elects to designate the day or part thereof as time off. Governor Manchin encourages all West Virginians to attend this celebration for the state’s senior U.S. Senator.

*****

Who will replace Senator Byrd?

The Washington Post had this to say:

“According to West Virginia law, Governor Joe Manchin III, a Democrat, will be able to select a replacement to serve out the remainder of Byrd’s term until 2012. However, there’s reasonable grounds for a challenge here: The law states that if a vacancy occurs more than two-and-a-half years before the term is up, a special election may be held; Byrd died two years, six months, and five days before his term expires.

But the law also holds that the special election will not take place until after a candidate “has been nominated at the primary election next following such timely filing and has thereafter been elected”—the “next” primary not being scheduled until 2012.

Still, it’s reasonable to expect a legal challenge to force a special election sooner; had Byrd died just one week later, all of this would be moot since the legal ambiguity would be eliminated. West Virginia has little experience in these matters, as Byrd has held his seat since 1959 and West Virginia’s other senator, John D. Rockefeller, since 1984.”

It’s also been reported by NorthJersey.com that U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg will replace the late Senator Robert Byrd as chairman of the influential subcommittee that controls homeland security funds.

Senator Byrd was 92.

Williamsburg area, Virginia – Busch Gardens is celebrating summer in a big way with a cool deal for families – free admission for kids 9 and younger. From June 21 through August 31 2010, Virginia residents can get a free child’s admission to Busch Gardens – a $51.95 value -with the purchase of an adult single-day admission ticket. This offer is available only online by visiting the Busch Gardens web site.

“We’re making summer fun more affordable for families,” said Park President John Reilly. “This kid’s free offer represents a significant savings for families with young children.”

Busch Gardens has more than 50 rides and attractions, including Sesame Street Forest of Fun and the Land of the Dragons that appeal to kids 9 and under. Families also can’t miss the all-new nighttime spectacular “IllumiNights: A Busch Gardens Encore.” The park comes to life during this nighttime summer celebration that combines the best live performances, music, special effects and fireworks.

Many other things to do this summer in Williamsburg, Yorktown and Jamestown

We’re all young at heart! Known as the birthplace of American democracy, Virginia’s Historic Triangle is comprised of three cities: Williamsburg, Yorktown and Jamestown.

During July and August 2010, the Historic Triangle certainly offers families a whole host of fun and educational activities – without paying an arm and a leg. Williamsburg itself is billed as a “town-sized living history museum” and tells inspirational tales of the United states’ journey “from colony to country.”

Close by, at Historic Jamestowne, first permanent English settlement in America, tells the story of John Smith and Pocahontas. And, at Yorktown, you can walk with your kids down the “Road to Revolution,” an outdoor walkway to the main museum building, where an introductory gallery presents the Declaration of Independence.

Here are some of the events happening during July and August that are fun for kids of all ages:

- July 4th Celebration -from 10 a.m. to 10.m. – What a perfect place to be for Independence Day! Enjoy historic events held all day in Colonial Williamsburg, including a salute to the 13 colonies, a garden party and plenty of fireworks.

In addition, on the July 4th weekend, don’t miss:

- Liberty Celebration at Yorktown Victory Center in Williamsburg, VA – Saturday, July 3 and Sunday, July 4 – In the autumn of 1781, the American Continental army commanded by George Washington, with the assistance of a French army, defeated the British army of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown, Virginia, forcing the British to surrender.

- Annual Wreath Laying Ceremony at Berkeley Plantation – Saturday, July 3 and Sunday, July 4 – Families can participate in the Annual Wreath Laying Ceremony at Berkeley Plantation, and wander through the mansion’s beautiful garden.

Cousins Rosalind and Celia take off to the Forest of Arden, in search of the wrongfully banished Duke and his group of merry men. Rosalinds disguise as a boy may help keep them safe, but also will prove an interesting obstacle to wooing the handsome Orlando.

“As You Like It” is one of the Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies, with songs galore and the famous “7 Ages of Man” speech to enliven the romantic escapades of not just one but four somewhat mis-matched couples.

The Shakespeare tradition in Williamsburg started way back in 1753 – when London’s Hallam Troupe put on a production of “The Merchant of Venice in Williamsburg.” The celebration of his writing continues today, thanks to the effort and hard work of William & Mary’s Department of Theatre, Speech and Dance.

The Festival generally includes three productions and a youth drama camp. Admission is: Adult $25; Student $15; Child (7-13) $10.
Werowocomoco was the principal residence of Powhatan, the paramount chief of more than 30 Indian tribes in Virginia’s coastal region at the time English colonists arrived in 1607. Archaeological excavations have revealed not only that the York River site was a uniquely important place during Powhatan’s time, but also that its role as a political and social center predated the Powhatan chiefdom.

More than 60 Werowocomoco artifacts spanning 10,000 years are shown for the first time in a museum setting. The six-month exhibit examines the relationship between material culture and political authority in the region from prehistoric times through the early 17th century and what the site means to descendent Virginia Indian communities today.

Warrenton, VA – Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) is hosting a special program at noon on Tuesday, July 13, 2010 - featuring Matt Bowman, the professional wrestler known as “Wiseguy” Jimmy Cicero. This event is free and open to the public.

Wiseguy Jimmy Cicero was trained in 1993 in Indian Trail, North Carolina by the former WWF World heavyweight Champion, The “Russian Bear” Ivan Koloff. Cicero wrestled primarily in the Carolinas in his first few years of his career, teaming with Steve Storm and Brian Perry. Cicero also traveled up to Delaware to compete in Jim Kettner’s ECWA.

In the late 1990s, Cicero started to travel all across the south, and northeast ranging from Alabama to Canada and every state in between. Along the way Cicero learned valuable lessons from Tom Brandi, Buddy Landel and Axl Rotten all of whom Cicero considers to be his mentors.

Cicero also formed several successful tag teams with the likes of Julio Dinero, Cueball Carmichael and “King of Old School” Steve Corino. More valuable lessons were learned in feuds with such notables as Balls Mahoney, Bob Backlund and Big Slam Vader.

Cicero’s good friend, then got him the opportunity to compete for the WWE. Cicero went on to be a regular Northeast-based wretler for WWE TV tapings for the next few years.

After a brief hiatus, Cicero returned to the indies where he competed for such fine promotions as Steel City Wrestling, Maryland Championship Wrestling, Southern Championship Wrestling, GOUGE, APWF, NWA NJ, KYDA and NWA 2000. Cicero settled down and hung up his boots in 2006.

In early 2009, Jimmy Cicero’s young son was diagnosed with autism. Cicero and his wife, Windra, discussed what could be done to raise awareness for this serious and prevalent disability. The answer was easy: return to the ring.

In March of 2009, Wiseguy Jimmy Cicero made his return to professional wrestling with the purpose of raising awareness for Autism. Cicero and his wife report that the promoters, fellow wrestlers and the fans have simply been tremendous. Bowman’s mission continues with his awareness campaign, “Help Wiseguy Bodyslam Autism!”

The July 13th event – part of an ongoing College guest speaker series – will be held at LFCC’s Fauquier Campus - located at 6480 College Street, in Warrenton, Virginia.

*****

For more information on the July 13th event, interested individuals may contact Sandi Pope, LFCC Student Activities Adviser, at (540) 351-1512, or email her: spope ~at~ lfcc.edu.

For more information about Bowman, visit the Wiseguy Jimmy Cicero web site. And, don’t miss the 1st State Championship Wrestling “Bodyslam Autism” Blowout – on July 17, 2010 - in Lewes, DE (8 miles from Ocean City, MD) – featuring Jimmy Cicero, former WWE stars Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka, Tom Brandi, Big Slam Vader, and ECW legend Axl Roten.

Readiness exercises conducted at the end of May 2010

According to a June 3, 2010 press release on the U.S. North Command web site, “three units representing each component of the Air Force made history in Gulfport, Mississippi, on May 16 – 23, 2010, when they successfully completed the first homeland defense operational readiness inspection.

The release reads: ”For the very first time, the U.S. Air Force has validated a unit’s wartime capability to defend the homeland by fighting an enemy right here on U.S. soil,” said Col. Greg Nelson, the commander of the Kentucky Air National Guard’s 123rd Airlift Wing, which served as the lead organization for the ORI.

“That represents a major shift in the way Air Force (leaders evaluate) unit readiness, because it puts the focus in our own backyard, rather than a simulated overseas location where these evaluations are usually staged,” he said.

The inspection was a total force effort, with the 123rd Airlift Wing representing the Air National Guard; the 317th Airlift Group from Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, providing active-duty forces; and the 70th Aerial Port Squadron from Homestead Air Reserve Base, Fla., contributing Air Force Reserve members and equipment.

As with traditional ORIs, this one tested the ability of each unit to mobilize Airmen and equipment, fly to a remote site, operate in a hostile environment, defend against enemy attacks, and redeploy back home, all while AMC inspectors evaluated every phase of the operation.

Unlike traditional ORIs, in this one the participants were tasked with supporting civil authorities while fighting an unconventional foe in the United States. In the past, ORIs have typically required units to deploy to simulated overseas bases and defend against conventional military forces.”

*****

Military units being put on alert?

Now, a number of independent news web sites are saying they have information that military units are being put on alert to assist in possible evacuations, including the evacuation of the whole Tampa Metro area.

According to Ben Fulford (May 31, 2010) of Labvirus, ” Gulf Evacuation Plans are on the table.” His article also includes a video of Greg Evensen, a former Kansas state patrolman, who did an interview on May 27, 2010 sharing information about a pending Gulf coast evacuation that he has received from his law enforcement contacts. Evensen says that the number of people they are preparing to evacuate is “mind boggling.”

Ben Fulford reports: “Emergency evacuations plans have been drawn up for entire Gulf of Mexico region as secret financial negotiations head to climax.

Toxic rain a possibility?

The Pentagon and US government have drawn up emergency plans to evacuate much of the population surrounding the Gulf of Mexico in anticipation of toxic rain and severe environmental damage, a military intelligence source says.

According to another independent news source, ‘the evacuation zone is expected to encompass the lower half of all gulf states – for starters – from Florida to Texas/Mexico border, possibly up to 50 million people.”

*****

Media blackouts and attempts to discourage social networking coverage reported

There are also reports of media blackouts by BP, and by police and authorities along the Gulf Coast. It’s been reported that journalists have been barred from taking pictures, and that the photos that have been snapped show the devastating effects on marine and plant life (which is sad), yet there are few pictures in the media showing Gulf Coast residents, pictures of BP operations, or actual oil spill relief efforts.

There are also reports out of Grand Island, Louisiana that citizens are being arrested, and have not been allowed to use their cell phone cameras to snap and post pictures, documenting what’s happening.

Today, Yana Kunichoff of TruthOut.org wrote:

“Journalists attempting to cover the BP oil spill have found themselves turned away not only by BP and its contractors, but also by the Coast Guard, local law enforcement and government officials, reported The New York Times.

According to Rhonda Panepinto, whose company Southern Seaplane was denied airspace access to fly a journalist over the spill, said she was questioned extensively by a BP contractor when making the request. ” Who was on the aircraft? Who did they work for?” recalled Panepinto. “The minute we mentioned media, the answer was: ‘Not allowed.’”

Scientists have also complained about information availability. Three weeks passed between the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, which set off the leak, and the first release by BP of images of oil gushing from the underwater pipe.”

It is unclear whether the dispersants used by BP to try and stop the oil spill, or some other reason, is the driving factor behind possible evacuations.

Some of the conspiracy-type web sites are warning that if possible mass evacuations are necessary, then U.S. citizens – including those evacuated – could be placed in FEMA camps and subject to martial law.

Health of Gulf Coast residents threatened

News sources are also claiming that “the coastal atmospheric benzene Phase 1 toxicity saturation is projected to be reached around mid-June, 2010.”

Today, Democracy Now! reported that so far, 86 people in Louisiana and Alabama have gotten sick from the oil spill and the widespread use of chemical dispersants.

“The majority of people who reported sick were clean-up workers and workers on the oil rig, whose symptoms have included throat irritation, cough, chest pain, headaches and shortness of breath.”

It appears that the real situation with the dispersants used by BP is now coming to light. Infowars.com reports today that BP has released 500,000 pounds of emissions into the air in the Gulf.

They write: “BP’s Texas City refinery, more than 400 pounds a day of benzene — 40 times the state reportable levels — was released during a 40-day period while a subunit of the refinery’s ultracracker unit was offline, according to a company filing with the state’s environmental agency Friday.

In all, BP officials said more than 500,000 pounds of pollutants and nonpollutants were released while the company increased flaring as they tried to repair a compressor on the faulty unit.

Refinery spokesman Michael Marr said in its follow up reporting with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, that BP estimated 36,000 pounds of nitrogen oxides and 17,000 pounds of benzene were released in the 40 days. State law requires 10 pounds or more of benzene and 200 pounds or more of nitrogen oxide during a 24-hour period must be reported through the commission’s air emissions database.”

Benzene and Human Health

According to wikipedia, Benzene is a clear, colorless and highly-flammable aromatic liquid that evaporates quickly into the air, and can dissolve in water. It is formed from both natural processes and human activities; natural sources of benzene include volcanoes and forest fires.

Benzene is present in crude oil, gasoline and cigarette smoke. It is industrially used as a solvent in paints and other chemicals and products such as dyes, detergents, nylon, plastics, drugs and pesticides. Benzene is widely used in the United States; it ranks in the top twenty chemicals for production volume and makes up about one percent of every gallon of gasoline.

Here are some Questions and Answers about benzene:

What are the main health hazards associated with breathing in methane?

According to the Canadian Centre for Health and Occupational Safety web site, “methane is not toxic below the lower explosive limit of 5% (50000 ppm). However, when methane is present at high concentrations, it acts as an asphyxiant. Asphyxiants displace oxygen in the air and can cause symptoms of oxygen deprivation (asphyxiation).

The available oxygen should be a minimum of 18% – or harmful effects will result. Methane displaces oxygen to 18% in air when present at 14% (140000 ppm). It is not expected to cause unconsciousness (narcosis) due to central nervous system depression until it reaches much higher concentrations (30% or 300000 ppm) – well above the lower explosive limit and asphyxiating concentrations.

The effects of oxygen deficiency are:

- 12-16% oxygen in the air = breathing and pulse rate are increased, with slight muscular in- coordination;

- 10-14% oxygen in the air = emotional upsets, abnormal fatigue from exertion, disturbed respiration;

- 6-10% oxygen in the air = nausea and vomiting, inability to move freely, collapse, possible lack of consciousness;

- Less than 6% oxygen in the air = convulsive movements, gasping, possible respiratory collapse and death.

Since exercise increases the body’s need for oxygen, symptoms will occur more quickly during exertion in an oxygen-deficient environment. Survivors of oxygen deprivation may show damage to some or all organs including the central nervous system and the brain. These effects may or may not be reversible with time, depending on the degree and duration of the low oxygen and the amount of tissue injury.

The asphyxiant effects of methane may enhance cardiac (problems).”

Are there health hazards to benzene exposure, i.e. can benzene cause cancer?

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has determined that benzene is a human carcinogen, and can cause various forms of cancer from prolonged exposure.

According to the IARC, benzene is often considered “the mother of all carcinogens,” as a large number of carcinogens have structures that include benzene rings. Occupational studies of workers exposed to high levels of benzene show association with leukemia cancer; including acute myelogenous leukemia, acute lymphocytic leukemia, and chronic myelogenous leukemia. Benzene-related leukemias have been reported to develop in as short as nine months, and can remain dormant for as long as 25 years after initial exposure.

Even a small amount of benzene exposure can cause temporary nervous system disorders, immune system depression and anemia. Short term affects include skin, eye, and respiratory tract irritation, headache, stomach irritation, drowsiness and dizziness. High levels of exposure can result in a rapid heart rate, excessive bleeding, tremors, vomiting, unconsciousness and death. Benzene can cause harmful effects on bone marrow, and can cause a decrease in red blood cells leading to myelofibrosis and myelodysplastic syndrome.

How can I be exposed to benzene? Who is most likely to be at risk?

Undoubtedly, the greatest risk for high level exposure to benzene is in the workplace. Occupational exposure to benzene is likely to occur in the rubber industry, oil refineries, chemical plants, and the shoe manufacturing industry, as well as in gasoline storage, shipment, and retail stations. However, most individuals are exposed to benzene through tobacco smoke, automobile exhaust and other environmental sources such as gasoline filling stations, industrial emissions, and food products that contain benzene naturally.

In addition, certain industries may release benzene into the surrounding air. These include ethyl benzene and styrene-production facilities, petroleum refineries, chemical manufacturing plants, and recovery plants for coke oven by-products. Leakage from underground storage tanks or from hazardous waste sites containing benzene can also result in the contamination of well water.

Is benzene regulated by the U.S. government?

Yes. Because of the dangerous health effects benzene exposure is known to cause, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency now regulates benzene in the air and water, as well as emissions by industry. The EPA has passed laws to limit the use and release of benzene to keep levels as low as possible. Regulations set by the Occupational Safety & Health Administration, in association with the EPA, limit workplace exposure to a maximum of one part benzene per million parts air (ppm), averaged over an eight-hour workday.

Further, congress passed the Safe Drinking Water Act in 1974 requiring the EPA to determine safe levels of chemicals in drinking water. Subsequently, benzene’s level was set to zero. (Note: The U.S. government has exempted energy companies from adhering to the Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974.)

Do I have legal rights if I have been occupationally exposed to benzene?

Yes. Despite being banned as a solvent in the U.S. for over twenty years, and the decrease of benzene in other manufactured products, workers continue to be exposed to direct and indirect sources of the chemical. The first thing to do if you suspect you’ve been exposed to benzene is to report the exposure to your employer, and seek immediate medical assistance.

If you believe you have been harmed by benzene exposure, you can contact an attorney to learn of your rights, and to file a legal claim for injuries sustained. Individuals can file a lawsuit within two years of discovering a benzene-related illness, regardless of the last time of exposure. Compensation can cover factors such as loss of income, medical costs, pain and suffering, and in the case of Wrongful Death lawsuits, loss of life.

A toxic “solution” gone awry

On Tuesday, June 8, 2010, TruthOut.org reported still further details about the chemicals used in the Gulf of Mexico.

Mike Ludwig writes: “Corexit, the main line of dispersants used by BP, came under public scrutiny last week after a Congressman informed The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that it is all but banned in the United Kingdom. The EPA told BP to use less Corexit and invest in chemicals proven to be less toxic and more effective. BP issued a response defending their decision to use Corexit, and soon the amount of dispersants dumped in the Gulf neared an unprecedented one million gallons.

Dozens of residents along the Gulf Coast have reported headaches, nausea and trouble breathing after coming in contact with oil and dispersant fumes, according to the American Association of Poison Control Centers. But, Corexit producer Nalco claims the newest version, Corexit 9500, is more than 27 times safer than dish soap, according to a web release.

Nalco is an international chemical company directed by board members who cut their petrochemical teeth with companies like Monsanto, DuPont, Exxon and – you guessed it – BP. When the media discovered the EPA had rated 12 dispersants as more effective than Corexit, all eyes turned to Nalco board member Rodney Chase, who spent 38 years with BP and left as an executive.

A million gallons of any chemical, including dish soap, could certainly harm people and wildlife, and Corexit is no exception. Nalco’s own safety data sheet identifies three hazardous chemicals in Corexit 9500, and lists symptoms of exposure as “acute” and consistent with reports from the poison control centers.

Corexit 9500 predecessor Corexit 9527 contained the notorious chemical 2-butoxyethanol that allegedly poisoned cleanup workers during the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil tanker disaster. The Corexit 9500 data sheet does not include the chemical in its list of hazards, but a 1996 University of California study on invertebrates concluded that there was no “significant difference” in toxicity between Corexit 9500 and the older formula.

In 2005, researchers at the University of Plymouth in the UK reported that Corexit’s ability to kill invertebrates constituting the base of the underwater food chain increases substantially at a certain concentration level. The report concluded that Corexit poses a threat to shallow water ecosystems like wetlands, estuaries and coral reefs.”

Fighting pollution with pollution can never work

According to the same TruthOut.org article, Conservationist Casi Callaway, director of the Mobile Baykeeper group, said last week: “We’ve had massive fish kills,” said Callaway. “The first fish kill we had was two weeks ago … it was everything, thousands of dead fish.”

It’s reported that; “Callaway said locals have observed BP contract workers filling trash bags with “brown goop” and requesting observers stop taking pictures. She believes the microbes and invertebrates consuming the vast underwater plumes of dispersed oil are depleting the oxygen in the Gulf and choking out other species. She also said it is a “very strong possibility” that dispersants are moving into Mobile Bay ahead of the oil.

Callaway says the dispersants are just a dirty way for the giant corporation to save face. “The chemical dispersant to us is a PR mechanism,” Callaway said. “Get it out of sight, get it out of mind. What we don’t know about the chemical dispersant is every reason not to use it.”

She insists options like siphoning and burning the oil are not perfect, but they are safer than filling the water with chemicals and expanding clouds of sinking oil droplets.”

Methane leaks also could contribute to the situation

There are also reports that the oil explosion has released methane into the water, and that when methane bonds with oxygen it forms carbon dioxide, adding to the greenhouse effect. Reports say that possible acid rain showers in the Gulf are possible.

Stay tuned.

Mark your calendars – This year, The Shenandoah County Fair – Virginia’s Friendliest Fair – will run August 27 through September 4, 2010. Features include: harness racing, food, rides, games, demolition derbies, a tractor pull, TNA wrestling amazing concerts, and animals of all kinds.

Here is who is confirmed to perform on the Grandstand this year in Woodstock, VA:

2010 Grandstand Entertainment Line-up

- Gloriana – Sunday, August 29, 2010
Amid the soaring four-part harmonies and electric stage presence, it’s clear that Gloriana represents an exciting new and vibrant force in country music. The group–Tom Gossin, Mike Gossin, Rachel Reinert and Cheyenne Kimball – consists of four uniquely talented and enthusiastic young musicians joining forces to create a fresh, one-of-a-kind sound that reflects the best of today’s Nashville.

- Eden’s Edge -Sunday, August 29, 2010

Generating much excitement after their performance at the Nashville Songwriters Association Hall Of Fame Honors event, Edens Edge is enjoying major attention from Nashville’s music row. Hook-laded pop country songwriting, flawless three part harmony and locked rhythm, coupled with a deep connection to their bluegrass roots, Edens Edge is the future of country music.

- Josh Turner – Wednesday, September 1, 2010

Whether it’s with his deep, soulful voice, his South Carolina accent or his philosophy on life, Josh Turner has never been one to hurry. But a memorable country song recently convinced him to pick up his pace.

The singer-songwriter was months away from scheduled recording sessions when he first heard “Why Don’t We Just Dance,” which became the debut single from his fourth studio album, Haywire. Josh placed the song “on hold” with the music publisher so they wouldn’t allow anyone else to record it. But when another artist expressed interest in the song, the publisher asked Josh to record the song to see if he liked it enough to keep it, and he did.

- Randy Houser – Thursday, September 2, 2010

The passion, enthusiasm and conviction in Randy Houser’s music is utterly irresistible. One listen to his soul-drenched singing is enough to convince you that you are in the presence of a masterful performer. One scan of his deeply felt lyrics is all the proof you need to see that this is a major songwriting talent. And one meeting with this smiling, endearing, open-hearted personality is all it takes to make you believe he deserves to be a star.

- Uncle Kracker – Friday, September 3, 2010

Though many know him from his early years as the DJ in Kid Rock’s Twisted Brown Trucker Band, Uncle Kracker (whose real name is Matt Shafer) has had impressive success as a songwriter, racking up co-writing credits on Kid Rock’s blockbuster hits “Bawitdaba,” “Cowboy,” “Forever,” “Only God Knows Why,” and 2008’s No. 1 “All Summer Long,” as well as his own Adult Top 40 No. 1 “Follow Me.”

A planning committee consisting of Veteran’s of WWII, Korea, Vietnam and the Gulf Wars has already met with board members and members of the community to plan the Veteran’s Day agenda and activities for the 2010 Shenandoah County Fair.

Thursday, September 2 is confirmed as this year’s Veterans Day at the Fair date. The Activities Tent will open at 10:00 a.m., with a Grandstand Ceremony starting at 11:00 am to honor Veterans.

Luray, VA – Summer days …they are on their way. In years past, kids would learn how to camp, how to build fires, how to survive in the wilderness. They’d go on family outings and learn how to hike trails safely. Seems like these days, more kids end up playing video games. Perhaps, there needs to be some balance.

Here’s an opportunity to get fit with your family this summer, and teach your kids hiking and camping skills at the same time. Shenandoah National Park is hosting two “Hiking with Children” seminars scheduled for two Saturdays this summer, on June 19 and July 17 – from 10:00 a.m. to noon. These programs are designed for parents that want to get outdoors to hike with their children and have a worry-free experience.

- Have you always wanted to hike with your family but were concerned about being safe?

- Do you wonder about keeping your little ones entertained and engaged?

- Are you making the right decisions about what to wear and what to take with you should unexpected situations arise?

Author Jeff Alt presents “Hiking with Children”

Guest speaker and expert hiker Jeff Alt, author of the celebrated A Walk for Sunshine, will share his expertise with you and your family. You will learn firsthand how to share nature with children for a fun and safe outdoor adventure.

Jeff is the father of two young children and regularly takes his family on overnight hiking trips. He has hiked the 2,160 mile length of the Appalachian Trail on his own. During the summer of 2007, with his wife and extended family, Jeff carried his 21-month-old daughter on a 50-mile hike across a swath of Ireland.

At the “Hiking with Children” seminars, Jeff will provide tips on how families with children can experience nature together on the trails in Shenandoah National Park. Both programs include a short hike with Jeff and park rangers on one of the park’s trails.

The “Hiking with Children” program is free but reservations are requested. There is a $15-per-car entrance fee to the park, good for seven days. Saturday, June 19 is Shenandoah Neighbors’ Day and the park will waive entrance fees for those residents living in counties adjoining the park
including: Albemarle, Augusta, Greene, Madison, Page, Rappahannock,
Rockingham, and Warren.

To register for a seminar, go to the Shenandoah National Park website.

“Hiking with Children” is one of the Shenandoah National Park Resource Seminars designed for those who want to get to know their national park a little more personally. Seminars provide a more in-depth experience to learn from scientists, researchers, educators, and other experts about resource issues and recreational opportunities in Shenandoah National Park.

Basics of Family Camping seminar will also be offered

Future seminars include The Basics of Family Camping, July 10 -11, and our science-based air quality seminar, What’s Up with the Air? on Saturday, August 14, 2010.

The complete Resource Seminar schedule can be found on the park’s website. Members of the Shenandoah National Park Association receive a 20% discount on seminars. The Shenandoah National Park Resource Seminars are co-sponsored by the Shenandoah National Park Association and ARAMARK, the park’s official concessioner.

For more information, contact the park’s Education Office at (540) 999-3500, ext. 3489.

Strasburg, VA – You are much greater than you ever dreamed. You are a soaring spirit – only constrained by a body if you choose to be. That’s what author and spiritual leader Wayne Dyer was illuminating in a November 2005 interview by Ray Hemachandra, Editor-In-Chief of New Age Retailer.

Wayne has this to say about how our spiritual life interacts with our physical body:

“An infant becomes a pre-toddler and then a toddler, and these stages are accompanied by things like crawling, walking, talking, getting larger, and so on. When we become adults, we still are developing.

Carl Jung said there are four archetypes adults go through, and these archetypes are reflected in the development of my work. The first archetype is the archetype of the athlete, reflecting the time in our adult life when our primary emphasis is on our body—what it looks like, how beautiful it is, how strong it is, and so on. We identify ourselves with our body. We are our body.

Growing adults next move to what Jung called the archetype of the warrior. We take our physical bodies out there to do what warriors do. What do warriors do? They are in competition with everyone else. They measure their success and their value on the basis of who they are better than, how much they get, and so on. So, this is the time in your adult life when your primary emphasis is on goal setting, on getting someplace else, and on defeating other people.

If you still are growing, you go through the archetype of the statesman or stateswoman. You stop asking, “What are my quotas?” and stop saying, “What is in it for me?” and, “How much can I get?” You begin to say, “What are your quotas?” and, “How may I serve?” Providing for others becomes much more important in your life than what you can get for yourself.

Finally, if you still are growing, you reach the highest archetype, the archetype of the spirit. This is the time when you finally realize what Jesus meant when he said, “You are in this world, but you are not of this world.” You are not here as a human being having a spiritual experience, but the reverse is true: All of us here are spiritual beings having a human experience.” Read more.

We are indeed “spiritual beings having a human experience.” So, any discussion of the changes happening across all levels and dimensions in 2010 – 2012 must begin with that reality of Spirit, and move from there.

*****

This article is second in a series on the many changes occurring on Earth during 2010 – 2012, and beyond. We’ll be exploring the spiritual, political and economic changes of our era.

As some of my favorites – Wayne Dyer, Anthony de Mello, Ram Dass, Paulo Coelho, Marianne Williamson, and Pema Chodron – and many other spiritual beings (just like you and me) have observed and experienced: Everything began with Spirit, and everything still begins there.

A few questions to ponder:

- Just how is our spiritual life interacting with our physical body as we experience the world moving faster all the time around us?

- How can we use our Spirit – our connection with Source – to provide guidance and strength as we weather the different types of storms that are surfacing now – in the world, in our minds, and in our heart?

*****

Do you know who you are? Like really know?

There’s an amazing woman named Kiesha Crowther, also known as “Little Grandmother,” though as Crowther says with a smile,” I’m the youngest, blondest grandmother you’ll ever meet.”

Crowther looks like your neighbor woman next door. What comes out of her mouth, what she sees, what she has gathered from Spirit about who she really is, and what we’re facing on Earth right now is at the same time both “out of this world” and “yeah, I sensed that all along.”

Little Grandmother is the last living ancestor of her tribe’s Native American wisdom keepers. With a true humility, she speaks of what she sees regardless of the consequences because she feels called – like many she says alive right now – to speak about the spiritual realities that are operating in what we see all around us – in both the chaos, and the beauty that exists amidst the chaos.

You are the strongest of your bloodline, an emissary for your ancestors

Little Grandmother says that each person that is alive right now on Earth elected to be here, and was selected to be here now because we are the strongest of our lineage. Each of our help – individually and in unison – is needed to help “turn the tide” against the destruction of the Earth, and each other – directing it instead toward peace and working together for good. It is indeed up to us, and up to you.

What will you choose? How will you honor those before and after you by your choices over the coming few decisive years? For what and for whom will you stand up?

So much of what we see everywhere – including in the media and in political jargon and inaction – talks about who and what we are AGAINST.

Let’s instead start real dialogues about who and what we are FOR.

If you like, here’s an excellent (2010) video to watch in which you can witness firsthand what Little Grandmother – one of the wisdom keepers of the Earth – has to say. There are indeed “wisdom keepers” in every culture across the planet beginning to talk.

This video is Part 1 of a 2-part evening with Kiesha Crowther, “Little Grandmother”. It was recorded before a live audience at Santa Fe Soul, to help people make sense of the time between now and 2012.

Summary of Insights: What’s Happening Spiritually in 2010

If you don’t have the time or inclination to watch the video, here is the “Cliff Notes” summary of the insights that Crowther is communicating:

From my notes, while watching Crowther’s video, in her words:

- It’s all about spirituality, remembering who you are. You come from somewhere much larger than you think.

- Study Nikola Tesla – who was born precisely at midnight on the night of July 9/morning of July 10, 1856 during a lightning storm. He knew far more than the government has let on. He knew the truth of how to change the weather. Government will not be able to contain this secret too much longer. What Tesla said, we can do. (Learn more about Tesla here.)

- Also study Sir Issac Newton. His findings about distance, time and space were “overlooked” and “dismissed as nonsense.” There are remains of various ancient cities across the Earth that are very similar to each other.

Ancient intelligence and technology

They are built using angles – down to one degree of each other. This is no mistake. Intelligence and technologies on Earth over 10,000 years ago helped to build these cities – with a purpose greater than this Earth.

- What is real is now coming to light. There can be no cover ups anymore.

- Around the world, wisdom keepers are saying that 2010 is the year we need to “get it”. The time has come for us to wake up to who we really are.

- Religion is man made. We are all God. We are all connected. Stop letting others limit you. Stop taking what others say as reality. Create your world.
Dream your dreams. They will come true. Stop waiting. There is not time to wait.

- This wisdom must come forth now. We each are chosen to come. Because we are the strongest of the strong. We can remember and we will remember.

- 2010 will be the most amazing year that has ever been seen by humanity. You will see things happen that you’d never think is possible.

The spiral – the most sacred of all symbols – cuts across cultures and times

- The wisdom keepers are just normal people. In every culture, since prehistoric times on Earth, all wisdom keepers have gravitated toward the same symbol: the spiral, the most sacred of all symbols.

To the Celts, the spiral meant “All Universe – Eternity – Goddess.” To the Romans, it meant “of the gods; the oneness of the soul.” To the Aborigines, it meant “all things that are glorious.” To the Islamic, it meant ” those things of God which cannot be said.” In the Orient, it meant “the beginning of all life – where God come from.” In India, it meant “the one, female sexuality.

To Native Americans, it meant: “all energy, all consciousness. Great Spirit, the sacred ones, the journey of everything living.” In Africa, it meant “the womb, the great goddess and mother.” To the Polynesians, it meant “immortality.” And, to the Mayans, it meant “the circle of life; all life.”

Why the spiral? People in each successive period on Earth have seen it. No one taught them about it. All cultures have seen the spiral in different locations on Earth, across time. It is everywhere. You cannot miss it.

Spirals have been happening all last year (2009). These spirals are “opening something up.” Not since prehistoric times, has there been this much new energy and new life. (My note: This is truly a paradox, as we also see many living things dying right before us.)

- Science will try and explain what will happen in 2010 and tell the people what to believe. Watch for that. Science though, will be without an answer. Millions will see it. There will be no way to cover up something this large. Already – all over the world – many have seen large blue spiral lights in the sky. Google “blue spiral lights seen” for yourself. In late 2009, there was the greatest sighting so far in Norway.

Oh gracious me! Blue spiral lights in Norway

Residents in northern Norway were left stunned after the light show, which almost looked computer-generated, appeared in the skies above them. Read more.

- The Ancient Ones – your ancestors, our ancestors – are telling us that this is a spectacular time to be alive. These spiral blue lights are one of the last things to come before the change of us and our Earth.

Light beings will come – from the mind into the heart. Someone has to help us awaken. These light beings love us very much, like parents do. They are coming to Earth to help us remember who we are and to share with us how we can create a world that’s much more fabulous. We have only been living in a dream now.

- The discoveries made during 2010 will surpass your highest expectations.

- The Great Pyramids, Giza, the Dome of the Rock are all important. So too, in Ethiopia, there is something much more valuable. In a small white church, a blind man is keeping guard over a box for humanity – the real Arc of the Covenant.

- There will be a “pouring out.” Life will change more rapidly than ever before, as you begin to remember. The Earth is fat and ripened, ready to give up all of her secrets. Government cover ups will be exposed – the knowledge of higher intelligence. Psychic phenomena will be accepted. We’ll discover new ways of knowing, and healing our bodies. Filthy waters will be cleaned. Child labor will be exposed and destroyed.

We’ve been living in a fog. We all have capabilities far bigger than we thought, including safe ways to produce enough energy for the entire planet.

There are amazing things happening

Life on Earth will be taken out of
of the hands of power, government, and organized religion, and placed in the hands of people who live from the heart. You are an integral part of this. Rise to the occasion. Your ancestors are counting on you, and assisting you.

*****

“There is a way which seems right unto man; the path thereof leads to death.” ~ Proverbs 16:25

*****

This article has been Part 2 in the series of articles exploring what people have to say about the many changes happening in 2010. The next article – on what’s happening on Earth politically – will follow soon.

Middletown, VA – Pictures are just coming in from the production of the play, Shenandoah, a classic tale of one Virginia man, Charlie Anderson, a widower, who didn’t want to get involved in the U.S. Civil War, but his family ended up pulled into the war through circumstances beyond his control. (Jimmy Stewart played Charlie Anderson in the 1965 movie version of the play.)

“Shenandoah” explores the conflict when it seems life has been reduced into a brother against brother situation. Both sides must wrestle with what they see and believe, and act accordingly. Peace can follow, and will.

The play is running at the famous Wayside Theater in the historic Shenandoah Valley, the region that was in fact the dividing point between the Federal government and the Confederacy. It was here that the decisive battles of the war were fought – from Antienam all the way down the Valley.

The play runs through July 3, 2010, and is suitable for children. In fact, children make up much of the cast, and thus the play also becomes a teaching vehicle, in addition to an enjoyable outing. The play was written by Gary Geld, Peter Udell, Phillip Rose and James Lee Barrett.

JMU’s Institute for Visual Studies offers a multidisciplinary, team-taught, collaborative course. Students and professors from different disciplines work closely together — an interesting dynamic that offers a new kind of educational experience. This past spring, students with literature or writing-related concentrations paired with visual-arts majors to create children’s books; graphic novels on themes ranging from science fiction, to mythology, to a Dickens send-up; campus life cartoons; and a childhood memoir. Professors hope the best among these Writing and Illustrating Literature class projects may see publication — a learning-experience bonus. Learn more.

This special event, is in celebration of Jan Neuharth’s release of the third in her series of books, and second book signing to be hosted at Fran Romeo and Company.

Set in the historic foxhunting community of Middleburg, Virginia, “The Kill” begins when globe-trotting photojournalist Abigale Portmann gets word in war-torn Afghanistan that her beloved uncle, the 70-year-old Master of the Middleburg Foxhounds, has been brutally murdered.

Abigale returns to the rocky relationships of her past in the close-knit equestrian community – a place she has deliberately avoided for seventeen years. As the gripping plot unfolds, friends become suspects and family ties are tested. Events for Abigale – and the hunt club – spin out of control as this riveting tale races to a terrifying finish.

When Neuharth last appeared at Fran Romeo & Company, she was working on the “The Kill.” Now it’s complete. Jan will also be signing “The Hunt” and “The Chase,” the first two books in the series. Any or all of her books are excellent gifts, especially when they are personally autographed.

Jan Neuharth, an attorney and avid equestrian, practiced law in Los Angeles before moving to the Virginia hunt country to establish Paper Chase Farms, one of the premier equestrian facilities of its kind.

Jan’s debut novel, The Hunt, was a Benjamin Franklin Award finalist and was nominated for a Library of Virginia Literary Award. The Chase won the IPPY Gold Medal for best Regional Fiction and was a Notable Winner of the Eric Hoffer Award. A graduate of the University of Florida and Vanderbilt Law School, Jan Neuharth lives in Middleburg, Virginia with her husband, Joseph Keusch, a former Joint Master of the Fairfax Hunt, and their children.

The Kill, the third novel in her Hunt Country Suspense series, will be released May 27, 2010. Keusch will also be greeting attendees to the book signing on June 6 – to add a touch of hunt flavor. (Hint: Joseph often comes dressed in full hunt regalia.)

*****

And, their exhibits are both fun and educational.

A Part of History: FDR and the U.S. Postal Stamp

Franklin D. Roosevelt, president during the Great Depression, used stamps to communicate with the American people. He was an avid stamp collector himself and understood the power of a picture. He helped to change the look of U.S. stamps to convey hope and optimism.

One of the Museum’s current exhibits entitled: “Delivering Hope: FDR & Stamps of the Great Depression,” offers insights into FDR’s personality, his relationship with Postmaster General James A. Farley, and his concern for the welfare of the American people.

The exhibit, which began last June will end on June 6, 2010, so makes plans now to see it before it closes.

The National Postal Museum, a Smithsonian Institution museum, is located in the old Post Office building next to Union Station in Washington, D.C. The Museum was created by an agreement between the Smithsonian Institution and the United States Postal Service in 1990, and opened to the public in 1993. It’s for history buffs and philatelists alike.

Citizens can watch Museum programs live online and submit questions for the speaker at the museum’s Facebook page.

Woodstock, VA – Tammy Kibler, a first grade teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Strasburg, Virginia, has been named Shenandoah County Public Schools’ Teacher of the Year 2010.

Mrs. Tammy Kibler, who began teaching in Shenandoah County in 1985, has “led the way in Sandy Hook’s Response to Intervention,” a national program designed to provide assistance to children who are having difficulty learning.

Principal Stacy Leitzel credits Mrs. Kibler as a “primary” reason for the school’s successes with this program. Tammy Kibler and Teachers of the Year from the other nine Shenandoah County schools were honored at an awards banquet at the Holiday Inn Express in Woodstock on May 25, 2010.

In his presentation at the Teacher of the Year banquet, Dr. B. Keith Rowland, Superintendent of Shenandoah County Public Schools said:

“The purpose of the Shenandoah County Public Schools Teacher of the Year Program is to pay tribute to the tireless efforts of our division’s outstanding teachers. In doing so, we recognize not to just the individuals that are present tonight but each of the 517 members of the Shenandoah County teaching profession who work so tirelessly each and every day.

Nominees are those individuals who have gained the respect and admiration of students, parents, and co-workers. They play an active and useful role in their communities as well as their schools, often distinguishing themselves as leaders. They have a superior ability to help all students achieve. It is my hope that these individuals will motivate and inspire other educators, and champion the positive contributions of the teaching profession to other perspective teachers.

I hope that this will also focus public attention on the positive accomplishments of these special teachers who have given so much of themselves to promote student excellence and achievement.”

The other nine Shenandoah County Public Schools’ Teachers of the Year 2010 are:

Shenandoah County, VA - “Your life represents a promise that you must fulfill.” Dr. B. Keith Rowland, Superintendent of Shenandoah County Public Schools, spoke these words to challenge this year’s Shenandoah Scholars, who were honored at a May 18, 2010 luncheon held at Triplett Tech in Mt. Jackson, Virginia.

Jeremy Raley, Director of Finance, offered a quote from Walt Disney to add his own challenge to these student scholars: “All of our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.”

Each year, Shenandoah Scholars, who are seniors from Stonewall Jackson High School, Central High School, Strasburg High School and Triplett Tech, are selected based on academic achievement, character, leadership, and community service. This year, twenty-five seniors were awarded scholarships from a fund managed by the Shenandoah Community Foundation. (See their names and pictures below.)

Shenandoah Scholars received a $1000 scholarship and each school’s valedictorian and salutatorian was awarded $5000 and $3000. (Dylan Dawson, a Stonewall Jackson student, was selected as the Shentel winner. Shentel funds one of the scholarships.)

Dr. Rowland applied Ralph Waldo Emerson’s wisdom to yesterday’s event. Emerson said, “The reward of something well done is to have done it. Any recognition you receive is just the icing on the cake, not to be expected but definitely to be enjoyed.”

Rowland reminded students and their parents to be proud of what students had to do— “the choices, and sometimes the sacrifices” to earn this honor of Shenandoah Scholar.

Each student was called forward to receive his or her plaque, a check, and congratulations from both their school’s principal and Dr. Rowland. Lunch, prepared and served by Triplett Tech students under the leadership of Chef Lou Giusto, followed the recognitions and photos.

Jeremy Raley, with the assistance of School Board Office Account Specialist Betty Laughlin, organized and coordinated Tuesday’s celebration, which was attended by the Scholars, their parents, secondary principals and guidance counselors, members of the Shenandoah County Board of Supervisors and the School Board, and representatives of the Shenandoah Community Foundation.

Established in 1963 as the Citizen’s Scholarship Program, the Shenandoah Scholars Program as it has come to be called was turned over to the Shenandoah Community Foundation in 2000 to ensure the permanence of its administrative and investment management and tax filing. Raley explained that the Shenandoah Community Foundation, established in 1999, is a tax-free, non-profit, public foundation whose mission is “Connecting People Who Care with Causes that Matter.”

Elizabeth Cottrell, president of the Shenandoah Community Foundation and a former school board member, shared her perspective: “As the mother of two former Shenandoah Scholars, I know how much this banquet–and these scholarships– mean to everyone participating.

Our Foundation considers it an honor to be entrusted with the management of this scholarship fund for the benefit of Shenandoah County students, now and in the future. Without the generosity and vision of those early donors who created this remarkable fund (now totaling over half a million dollars), we would not be able to help as many students as we do. With additional donations, we could do even more. Donations of any size to this and any of our other funds are always welcome. Scholarships are only one of the ways our Foundation meets the needs of the community.

If anyone has a desire or interest to create a “forever” fund themselves for a scholarship or the benefit of their favorite church or charity, we would be glad to talk to you about possible ways to accomplish this. Philanthropy is no longer just for the wealthy. Together, we can create ways to meet future needs for our community. .. ‘Connecting People Who Care with Causes that Matter.’

The Shenandoah Community Foundation may be found on the web here.

Rockingham County, Virginia – An article that appeared on citizensvoice.com on May 8, 2010 speaks about what is happening in nearby Pennsylvania that could threaten private property ownership in the Valley – and could threaten the health of Valley residents, the pollution of land and air, and the purity and sustainability of the Valley’s food and water supply.

David Falchek, the author of the Pennsylvania article, gives the example of Laurie and Brian Kaszuba of Dickson City, Pa, who turned down an offer for $16,000 from a natural gas pipeline company to run a natural gas pipeline through their Great Bend property.

Falchek writes: “If pipeline companies eyeing the Marcellus Shale region have their way, property owners won’t likely have the option to refuse these corporations.” The article says that Laser Marcellus Gathering LLC, of Houston has applied to the Public Utility Commission to be declared a “utility” in Pennsylvania, “a designation that would give the company the power to condemn any property it needs and to use eminent domain to obtain easements for pipelines.

What are the implications for private property owners in Pennsylvania, here in Virginia, and in other states?

According to Falcheck’s article, “Laser Marcellus Gathering LLC is planning to build a 30-mile pipeline, costing about $37 million, to connect gas wells in western Susquehanna County and New York with the interstate Millennium pipeline that runs across New York state’s southern tier.”

Falcheck continues: “The outcome of the request before the Public Utility Commission (in Pennsylvania) could change the way easements are negotiated. With the Marcellus gas rush well underway and millions of Pennsylvania acres leased by gas exploration companies, pipeline easements are the new wave of legalese to arrive in mailboxes throughout the Marcellus region.

Susquehanna County, a hot-spot for shale gas, is destined host an underground web of pipes from every wellhead. Unlike natural gas exploration companies, so-called “midstream” companies that gather gas have the option of becoming utilities. Several midstream companies have filed motions supporting Laser’s bid.”

According to Stephen W. Saunders, a Scranton environmental attorney: “The company would be able to say ‘negotiate with us or we’ll just take your property through condemnation,’” Saunders said. “There’s no requirement for a utility to negotiate at all. Eminent domain is a nice tool for a company to have in its back pocket.”

The article states: “At most well development sites in other states, there also is right-of-way leasing, said David Messersmith, part of Penn State Cooperative Extension Marcellus Shale Team, which is providing information to the public about the industry. Messersmith expressed a concern about that type of arrangement. “People aren’t up to speed on the terms and the language of these things,” Messersmith said.”

It’s reported that some companies are blanketing the area with lease offers hoping to trade or sell rights-of-way in the future. “Under eminent domain, it doesn’t matter what the property owner says or feels,” he said. “People shouldn’t be forced to have something on their property they don’t want – at any price.”

Turn Now to the Valley —

The Rockingham County Board of Supervisors has received an application from Carrizo (Marcellus) LLC to drill an exploratory gas well in Bergton, Va – which is in Rockingham County, very close to the West Virginia border.

The Rockingham Board of Supervisors received a letter dated May 11, 2010, from the Oil and Gas Accountability Project (OGAP) of Earthworks, an environmental research and advocacy firm who has been asked to comment on Rockingham County’s pending decision on an exploratory gas drilling special use permit application from Carrizo (Marcellus) LLC.

The letter reads:

“We encourage you to thoroughly study the serious issues related to hydraulic fracturing and not rush a decision on the permit. Founded in 1999, OGAP’s mission is to work with communities to protect their homes and the environment from the impacts of oil and gas development.

To this end, we build coalitions among diverse constituencies, are a resource for citizens and communities, and promote policy change in the way oil and gas development occurs. We have been involved in such activities in more than 20 states (including in the Marcellus Shale region) and play a key role in ensuring the fair treatment of landowners and protection of environmental quality.

Your staff has put forth sound comments and recommendations regarding problems with the Carrizo LLC application. These include location of the proposed well in a floodplain; lack of assurance that a disposal pit will be above floodplain levels or able to withstand a flood; the risk of chemical contamination of streams and other surface water resources; lack of specificity on testing of water or definition of “satisfactory” levels of contamination; lack of identification of the chemicals and lubricants to be used by the company; and unclear plans for waste and wastewater disposal.

Importantly, if this special use permit request is granted, no additional permits will be required should Carizzo LLC decide to move from the exploratory into the completion and production phases. As a result, the information and documentation provided by the applicant regarding the environmental and economic impacts of its drilling plans is speculative. Before the current special use permit is granted, questions should be asked and answered regarding the likely impacts of future production on such critical issues as water resources, infrastructure, traffic, air quality, and the health of residents.

With this in mind, please consider the following:

• A single instance of hydraulic fracturing can require between 2 and 9 million gallons of water, placing a considerable strain on municipal water sources and potentially depleting and disrupting aquifers and streams.

• Hydraulic fracturing and drilling processes introduce dozens of chemicals into wells and can release heavy metals, hydrocarbons, and radioactive materials. Contaminating diesel oil may be used to lubricate well bores. These compounds remain present in the resulting wastewater and “produced” water, which have caused instances of contamination in Pennsylvania, Texas, and other areas and which wastewater plants are generally not equipped to treat.

• Although the applicant states that drill cuttings are “just rock cuttings ground up very small,” drill cuttings may contain radioactive compounds. The classification of cuttings and other drilling waste products as “hazardous waste” currently poses challenges for landfill operators in Pennsylvania, New York, and other areas.

• Because of special exemptions in federal law, oil and gas companies are not required to disclose the hundreds of chemicals and compounds used in hydraulic fracturing. Carrizo LLC states that “environmentally friendly” agents will be used, but also that they are “proprietary” (and therefore do not have to be revealed).

Legislation known as the FRAC Act is pending in the U.S. Congress to close this loophole – thereby holding companies accountable for contamination and protecting citizens and municipalities. To date, Virginia co-sponsors include Representative Moran of the 8th District and Gerald E. Connolly of the11th District.

• The United States Environmental Protection Agency is currently conducting a major new study on the impacts of hydraulic fracturing on water supplies and quality, which will likely reveal new evidence critical to permitting decisions by municipalities, states, and counties such as your own.”

It is clear that the well being of the people of Rockingham County, the Shenandoah Valley, and Virginia, may be threatened by the significant environmental and health hazards implicit in the gas drilling process.

In addition, like neighboring states, the property rights of individual citizens may also be at risk if eminent domain status is granted to oil drilling corporations.

Public input needs to be actively sought and incorporated into these decisions on all levels.

In Related News – From a recent Earthworks press release:

Earthworks Oil & Gas Accountability Project has named Nadia Steinzor to their staff. Ms. Steinzor, who started working at Earthworks in mid-April, will lead the organization’s campaign work in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Maryland. “The Marcellus Regional Organizer position represents a milestone for us and we are honored to be adding our voice and expertise to the great effort to reform gas drilling practices in the eastern United States, Lachelt stated.

Nadia Steinzor has worked for over 15 years in communications, writing and editing, and research on environmental and social issues. She has experience as a consultant for progressive non-profit organizations and has held positions at Zero Population Growth, the International Center for Research on Women, and most recently as Director of Communications at the Mohonk Preserve.

Chesapeake Energy estimates that the Marcellus shale has 262 trillion cubic feet of recoverable natural gas reserves. The Marcellus covers a 54,000 square mile region in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Maryland – roughly an area the size of Florida. Thousands of wells will likely be drilled impacting many land and mineral owners, communities and watersheds. Leasing is occurring at a rapid pace and residents are being approached every day to lease the minerals under their land to gas development companies.

Steinzor’s charge is to help reform state oil and gas regulations, educate and support impacted communities and promote EARTHWORKS’ federal reform agenda which includes passing the FRAC Act to remove the exemption of fracturing from the Safe Drinking Water Act and achieve full disclosure of the chemicals used in drilling and fracturing fluids.

Nadia holds an M.S. in Environmental Policy from Bard College and both an M.A. in Peace and Development Studies and a B.A. in International Relations from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. Nadia lives in Willow, New York, in the eastern Catskills.

Middletown, Va – Ever meet a kind, intelligent pair who are individually wonderful, and even moreso together? Enter Soojin and Dayton Henceroth. a vibrant couple from Alexandria, Virginia – near D.C. – who just tied the knot last October 25th in the beautiful, historic Shenandoah Valley.

Now, almost seven months later, when asked how married life is going, Soojin pipes up: “I pinch myself. For me, it’s a dream come true. Our wedding day was three years in the making…We’re having a lot of fun.”

A Wedding on History’s Battlefield
Soojin and Dayton’s choice to hold their wedding out in the Valley is part of a growing trend: destination weddings. For the last several years, they’ve been venturing out to Northern Shenandoah Valley towns – like Stephens City, Middletown, and Strasburg, Virginia – making a habit of weekend trips to explore Dayton’s other passion – American Civil War history.

During one of their jaunts last year, they fell upon Belle Grove Plantation in Middletown, Virginia. It’s is an authentic 1797 Manor House, that was built by Major Isaac Hite and his wife Nelly Madison Hite, sister of President James Madison. Based on design principles of Thomas Jefferson, the elegant Federal era Manor House features intricate, hand carved woodwork and a restored interior. The house is constructed of native limestone quarried on the property.

Belle Grove was used as a headquarters by Union General Phillip Sheridan during the Civil War Valley Campaign of 1864 and was at the very center of the pivotal Battle of Cedar Creek. After a surprise attack by Confederate General Jubal Early in the early hours of October 19, 1864, General Sheridan quickly regained the territory, securing the Valley for the Union and boosting President Abraham Lincoln’s chances for re-election.

Belle Grove and Cedar Creek was a central location back then, and it still is. It’s located off Interstate 81 at the Middletown exit, just north of where Route 66 from D.C. leads into the Valley – very convenient, yet off the beaten path. Signal Knob is in the distance.

Let It Be Laid Back
Soojin, 31, remembers: “The minute we arrived at Belle Grove, we fell in love with it. I first noticed the mountains, and experienced a lot of emotions all at once, dreams of future possibilities and a family. I envisioned a wedding… it was just so peaceful.”

“Soojin comes from a traditional Korean family,” explains Dayton, 34. “They were expecting a large, formal church wedding, so it took them a little time to warm up to the idea of having the wedding outside, out here in the Valley.”

“We wanted a small, intimate wedding, to share our day with the most important people in our lives,” the couple explains. “We also wanted to treat people to a mini-vacation. It is really like being in a whole other world when you’re out here. So serene.”

And so, where soldiers once fought the battle of Cedar Creek now would become the intimate Valley backdrop for bringing Dayton and Soojin’s families and closest friends to share their merging as husband and wife, and of Korean and American customs.

On Friday, October 24, 2009, about family members and friends converged on the Fairfield Inn & Suites in Strasburg, Virginia, occupying about 30 rooms altogether. The next evening about 90 people witnessed a miraculous ceremony as two cultures and lives were intricately woven together.

Soojin’s parents, Hjun and Sung Lee, came from Gaithersburg, Maryland, while Dayton’s parents, Dr. Bill and Diane Henceroth came from Richmond. “It was a central location, really,” they both say in unison. “And, the staff at the Fairfield was great, very hospitable. The hotel was ideally suited to our entourage of friends and family that came and stayed with us at the Fairfield. You just don’t get the same level of individualized personal attention and TLC in Northern Virginia as we received here.”

The Fairfield Inn & Suites in Strasburg is just five miles south down Route 11 (Old Valley Pike) from Belle Grove.

A Clearing In The Night Sky
And so it was. From The Wayside Inn in Middletown for the reception dinner on Friday night… to hiring Caroline Mountain Band, a Shenandoah Valley Americana duo, to play local historic tunes… to watching a threatening storm pass the “day of”… In the end, the setting and the timing at Belle Grove could not have been more perfect.

Just as their evening ceremony began, the sky cleared, and the moon shone brightly through the night clouds down on the couple and the gathering. “It was a miracle,” they relate. The tents set up on the Belle Grove grounds were aglow as the two said “I do” and became one – on a crisp, Fall evening.

Dayton’s brother, Adam, was the best man, Soojin’s sister, Youme was the Maid of Honor, and her friend, Angel, was the Matron of Honor. Local Lutheran pastor William Ballance officiated. Dayton’s father, Dr. William Henceroth sang The Lord’s Prayer.

During the ceremony, according to Korean custom, all four parents were honored, as they exchanged gifts with each another. “In my country’s tradition, it’s all about respecting our elders. They got us this far in our lives, so we make sure they know during the ceremony just how much we appreciate them,” Soojin says.

It Takes a Village To Make A Wedding
Friends came from as far away as Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Ohio, and Austin, Texas, and were able to take in some of the many sights close at hand, including Shenandoah Caverns and Shenandoah Vineyards.

In addition to the Fairfield Inn getting high marks from the Henceroths, the couple is fast to point out all of the other people in the Valley who helped to make their wedding weekend unforgettable. Now “part of the family,” these folks include: Betsy Anderson, wedding coordinator at Belle Grove. Beth Lehman at the flower shop in Stephens City. Grand Rentals. Shaffer’s BarBQ. Hope at N2U Hair. Anna Quinn Jewelers. And, the staff at nearby Cristina’s Cafe in Strasburg.

In fact, many of the guests had so much fun that as Dayton’s mom, Diane Henceroth, remarks,” We plan to come back next year and have a reunion of sorts. Everything is so convenient and breathtaking at the same time.”

O, Shenandoah, We’ll Always Hear You
“We are truly blessed and humbled,” Soojin confides. Dayton agrees, as he concludes: “Holding our wedding here in the Valley with those we love as witnesses forged a connection to this beautiful place that we’ll carry forever.”
