Middletown, VA – With the continued success of its production of the play, “Shenandoah,” Wayside Theatre is pleased to announce the addition of an exciting event to their 2010 summer performance calendar. Wayside’s Intern Company will take off their tattered Union and Confederate uniforms and wipe away their battle dirt for an intimate night of music and cocktails with their first planned “Intern Cabaret Showcase” of the 2010-2011 Season.

For two nights only, Thursday, July 1 and Friday, July 2, the Curtain Call Café of the theatre will be converted to a performance stage – offering a free Cabaret to the community.

Middletown has been treated to the beginnings of what will be an exceptionally unique and diverse season of characters from Artistic Director Warner Crocker and his professional acting company, whom have taken their audiences through civil war in the Shenandoah Valley in the musical, Shenandoah. Meanwhile, the community is eagerly anticipating the theatre’s next main stage production of the comedy, “Dead Man’s Cell Phone.”

With all of the excitement that this season will surely offer, this Intern Cabaret Showcase will feature some of the theatre’s budding talent in a completely new light.

Warner Crocker, Artistic Director, says, “What makes this Cabaret so unique is that it offers the community a rare glimpse at the actual people and personalities that have kept Middletown entertained night after night on Wayside’s main stage.”

“The company of young professional actors will be able to drop their characters and on-stage oddities and perform material that is close to them. It also makes for a perfect opportunity for these talented individuals to perform the songs and scenes, and instrumental performances that they feel best showcase their talent and personalities, which theatre patrons wouldn’t otherwise get to witness.”

Wayside Theatre’s Intern Cabaret Showcase begins at 11:00 p.m. on Thursday July 1 and Friday July 2, following that evening’s performance of the play “Shenandoah” at the Wayside Theatre’s Curtain Call Café. It is free of charge; donations are appreciated.

Wayside Theatre is located at 7853 Main Street in Middletown, VA (off Interstate 81). The Theatre is handicap accessible, smoke-free, and offers a cash bar.

For more information call (540) 869-1776,or visit the Wayside Theatre web site.

*****

According to wikipedia, “Cabaret is a form of entertainment featuring comedy, song, dance, and theatre, distinguished mainly by the performance venue – a restaurant or nightclub with a stage for performances and the audience sitting at tables (often dining or drinking) watching the performance being introduced by a master of ceremonies, or emcee (MC).”

Cabaret was also a 1972 American musical film directed by Bob Fosse, and starring Liza Minnelli, Michael York and Joel Grey. The film is set in Berlin during the Weimar Republic in 1931, under the ominous presence of the growing National Socialist Party.

Mark your calendars – This year, The Shenandoah County Fair – Virginia’s Friendliest Fair – will run August 27 through September 4, 2010. Features include: harness racing, food, rides, games, demolition derbies, a tractor pull, TNA wrestling amazing concerts, and animals of all kinds.

Here is who is confirmed to perform on the Grandstand this year in Woodstock, VA:

2010 Grandstand Entertainment Line-up

- Gloriana – Sunday, August 29, 2010
Amid the soaring four-part harmonies and electric stage presence, it’s clear that Gloriana represents an exciting new and vibrant force in country music. The group–Tom Gossin, Mike Gossin, Rachel Reinert and Cheyenne Kimball – consists of four uniquely talented and enthusiastic young musicians joining forces to create a fresh, one-of-a-kind sound that reflects the best of today’s Nashville.

- Eden’s Edge -Sunday, August 29, 2010

Generating much excitement after their performance at the Nashville Songwriters Association Hall Of Fame Honors event, Edens Edge is enjoying major attention from Nashville’s music row. Hook-laded pop country songwriting, flawless three part harmony and locked rhythm, coupled with a deep connection to their bluegrass roots, Edens Edge is the future of country music.

- Josh Turner – Wednesday, September 1, 2010

Whether it’s with his deep, soulful voice, his South Carolina accent or his philosophy on life, Josh Turner has never been one to hurry. But a memorable country song recently convinced him to pick up his pace.

The singer-songwriter was months away from scheduled recording sessions when he first heard “Why Don’t We Just Dance,” which became the debut single from his fourth studio album, Haywire. Josh placed the song “on hold” with the music publisher so they wouldn’t allow anyone else to record it. But when another artist expressed interest in the song, the publisher asked Josh to record the song to see if he liked it enough to keep it, and he did.

- Randy Houser – Thursday, September 2, 2010

The passion, enthusiasm and conviction in Randy Houser’s music is utterly irresistible. One listen to his soul-drenched singing is enough to convince you that you are in the presence of a masterful performer. One scan of his deeply felt lyrics is all the proof you need to see that this is a major songwriting talent. And one meeting with this smiling, endearing, open-hearted personality is all it takes to make you believe he deserves to be a star.

- Uncle Kracker – Friday, September 3, 2010

Though many know him from his early years as the DJ in Kid Rock’s Twisted Brown Trucker Band, Uncle Kracker (whose real name is Matt Shafer) has had impressive success as a songwriter, racking up co-writing credits on Kid Rock’s blockbuster hits “Bawitdaba,” “Cowboy,” “Forever,” “Only God Knows Why,” and 2008’s No. 1 “All Summer Long,” as well as his own Adult Top 40 No. 1 “Follow Me.”

Horse Lovers get ready!

For all you horse lovers, The Shenandoah Silver Spurs 38th 4-H Annual Horse Show (for ages 9 and up) will be held at the Fairgrounds on Sunday, August 29, 2010 at 8 a.m. (rain or shine). The show judge this year is Leslie Prillaman.

Honoring Veterans at the Fair on September 2

A planning committee consisting of Veteran’s of WWII, Korea, Vietnam and the Gulf Wars has already met with board members and members of the community to plan the Veteran’s Day agenda and activities for the 2010 Shenandoah County Fair.

Thursday, September 2 is confirmed as this year’s Veterans Day at the Fair date. The Activities Tent will open at 10:00 a.m., with a Grandstand Ceremony starting at 11:00 am to honor Veterans.

Orkney Springs, VA – Get ready for cool summer breezes and great tunes! The Shenandoah Valley Music Festival (SVMF) has announced their 2010 lineup.

During its 47 year history, the SVMF has gained a reputation throughout the Mid-Atlantic region as a place where: weekend travelers come to get away from it all, music lovers come to be entertained, friends come to enjoy a picnic, couples come to star gaze, and history buffs come to visit a bygone era.

You will be amazed that a music venue like this still exists!

Held in the secluded village of Orkney Springs, Virginia, (near Bryce Resort) a rustic, open-air pavilion on the grounds of a historic mineral springs spa and resort hotel, is home to all of the Festival’s summer concerts. Known formerly as the Orkney Springs Hotel, it is now owned by the Episcopal Dioceses of Virginia, as part of the Shrine Mont Camp and Conference Center.

In its heyday during the early 1900s, the Hotel served as a popular resort where guests from the large eastern cities would come to spend their summers relaxing in the quiet Virginia countryside and soaking up the spring waters believed by many to have medicinal properties.

Standing at the end of a winding country road leading west to the mountains from the Shenandoah Valley, the Hotel’s secluded location still makes it a popular retreat for individuals and groups. The Hotel, which has undergone recent renovations, still possesses a quiet turn of the century charm which continues to attract a variety of visitors and Festival audiences.

Great music, cool mountain breezes, with a whole sky of stars to amaze you

The Festival’s main season includes eight to 10 evening concerts featuring symphonic – both pops and classical – folk, country, bluegrass, big band and an assortment of other genres. The concerts are held on select weekends throughout the summer and feature many acclaimed regional and national artists. Old-fashioned ice cream socials before every concert are a Festival tradition and a favorite of concert attendees.

This year, the season runs from July 23 until September 5, 2010. Concerts are usually scheduled two per weekend – one on Friday night and one on Saturday night so those coming to the Valley from the Metro (or other areas) can enjoy a whole, relaxing summer weekend in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. There are so many great hotels and B&Bs, and great restaurants nearby.

Conicville, VA – Just announced: An interactive musical event – with some wine and country barbeque. Who could ask for anything better?

For the first time, the public will pick one of the acts for this summer’s Shenandoah Valley Music Festival line up- at the first ever “Barrels, Barbecue and Bands” on May 22 – to be held at one of Shenandoah County’s newest wineries, Cave Ridge Vineyard in Conicville, VA. Come on out to the Valley for relaxation and some great tunes!

Outdoor Concert – You choose the Best Band
Three great Midatlantic Regional bands will take the stage, starting at 1 p.m. People attending the event will vote on their favorite band – and the public’s favorite will open for the bluegrass band Cherryholmes at the Music Festival on September 4, 2010 in Orkney Springs.

Three Contenders In the Running
The three contenders are well-known bands with great reputations: Amanda Murphy and the Lost Indians, Dry Mill Road and Soul Dressing. Each will perform a 25 minute set on May 22, and the votes will be tallied after the last set.

Amanda Murphy and the Lost Indians, based in Northern Virginia and the northern Piedmont region, began playing together in 2007. Since then, Amanda and members Andy Nocero, Dave Sargent, Terry Patten and John Burns have become regulars at Tiffany Tavern in Old Town Alexandria and Katie’s Irish Pub in Springfield, playing a mix of progressive and traditional bluegrass. They opened for bluegrass legends Seldom Scene at the Strasburg Theatre in November.

Drymill Road is a progressive acoustic bluegrass band offering an energetic show of original material featuring the songwriting of Sean Loomis and its own renditions of popular covers. Based in West Virginia, Drymill Road was formed by band leader Sean Loomis in 2008. The band was originally a trio including Sean Loomis on vocals and guitar and Dave Hurt on bass, both of whom are graduates of the music program at Shenandoah University and masters of their instruments.

In October 2009, the band recruited Doug Ross on mandolin and Robert Mabe on banjo, both of whom are heavily influenced by traditional music. As a four piece band, Drymill Road has a rich full sound. Using each instrument as a voice, the band takes you on a wild harmonic journey.

Soul Dressing plays a blend of country, bluegrass and old favorites, all with their original twist. Band members Randy Black on guitar, Pat Wertman on bass and Scott Linton on percussion and mandolin, all have varied influences. The three have been playing music together in various bands and venues for more than 10 years. Four years ago, they created Soul Dressing. The group is based in Rockingham County, VA.

Tickets for “Barrels, Barbecue and Bands” are $35 per person and all guests must be 21 or over. The event runs from noon until 5. Food will be served throughout the afternoon. The event is sponsored by Cave Ridge Vineyard and it is to benefit the Music Festival, according to winemaker Randy Phillips.

According to Shenandoah Valley Music Festival oganizers, those who attend will receive a glass of wine in a souvenir wine glass, a great barbecue dinner with all the fixings and three sets of great acoustic music – and that chance to pick one of the Music Festival’s summer musicians. The event goes on rain or shine.

To purchase tickets for “Barrels, Barbecue and Bands,” contact Cave Ridge Vineyard at (540) 477-2585, or go to the Cave Ridge Vineyard web site.

More About Historic Williamsport

Not far from Martinburg, WV, Williamsport, Maryland is located in the heart of the Cumberland Valley “where the serpentine, tree-embowered Conococheague Creek mildly flows at long last into the Potomac River.” Here, more than 275 years ago, smoke was rising from a few scattered cabins of a then western frontier trading post called “Conococheague”.

The native Indian name “Conococheague” means “a long way”; and the name “Potomac” means “trading place” in the Algonquin tongue. Before any settlement, the area was inhabited by Delaware and Catawba Indians.

Because of the Potomac River and C & O Canal, Williamsport has been known as the ” cross-road” and “gateway” to the South, West, and East. Settlers, travelers, and pioneer families passed through the thousands on their way south and east.

To learn more about the Williamsport and what it has to offer, visit their web site.

Woodstock, VA – Winston Churchill once said, ” We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” His words provide the impetus for an inspirational and innovative social action event – led by students – that’s scheduled for tomorrow, April 24, 2010 in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley.

Earth Day is Everyday

It’s significant that “The Big Give,”as the event is called, will take place after Earth Day. Yesterday, we officially celebrated the reality that we are all one on Earth – with fanfare. Tomorrow, April 24, 2010, there are activities taking place all over America – including The Big Give – where people are practicing the principles of putting others first – and teaching that way of being to children.

The reality that if we can each BE the change, the CHANGE will come. And, the change we’re talking about is a world where peace reigns and people share what they have with others freely — not because it’s the “cool” or “green” thing to do, but because it’s the natural thing to do, it’s life and love itself.

Summary:

The Big Give involves the students and staff and parents of Peter Muhlenberg Middle School (PMMS) in Woodstock, VA – and also the community. The day is designed to help others – through coordinating reach out programs for young people to participate in – and take the lead – and asking local residents to come and give a hand, as well. The school is partnering with local non-profit service groups to provide assistance to those in need.

Peter Muhlenberg Middle School (PMMS) is part of Shenandoah County School District. Gina Stetter is the Principal of the school, and Jennifer Jones is the overall Coordinator of the event.

It’s no surprise that The Big Give is a win-win for everyone, as anything build on giving and receiving without expectation is. It will take place at Peter Muhlenberg Middle School (PMMS) at 1251 Susan Avenue in Woodstock, Virginia on April 24, 2010 – from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m..

This is a MEGA-EVENT – where at one place and one time – one where/when – many “drives” and outreach efforts will converge simultaneously on-campus – with the students leading the way. Some students will also go out to events scheduled “off-campus” tomorrow – all across Shenandoah County – joining in activities designed to help others, and to help protect the beauty and long-term sustainability of the Shenandoah Valley area of the U.S..

Residents across the Shenandoah Valley and the region are encouraged to show up tomorrow, use the services provided for a donation (like the car wash and the hot dog stand, for example). And/or, they can bring their own used books, old cell phones, a can of food, etc. to add to the goods that are being collected. It’s a “bring what you have, receive what you need” extravaganza.

*****

The Mission of “The Big Give”

Organizers of The Big Give emphasized the mission of the program: ” to involve students in their community and help them gain a better understanding of the needs in their area, thereby creating successful, educated, and caring young citizens.”

The Big Give is Peter Muhlenberg Middle School’s first large-scale community service event – with literally hundreds of students completing a variety of community service projects at PMMS, and throughout Shenandoah County. (Students who attend will earn 20 “Patriot Pride” points that count toward their grade.)

Morning announcements at the middle school this past week have educated students about the various non-profit groups that will partners at The Big Give tomorrow. It’s a way for students to understand how social action and social justice comes about, and to get involved in the process – and realize the many personal and community rewards gained through the process.

Glass is made from sand. Different sands give different properties of color and quality to the glass. The types of sand are mixed together. Metal oxides can be added to give color to the glass. The sand is placed in a stone crucible and heated in a furnace until it melts. A blob of glass is lifted from the crucible on the end of a long pipe called a Blowing Iron. The blob of glass is very hot, and runs about like thick syrup.

The Glassblower must work quickly to stop the blob of glass falling off the blowing iron. The glassblower blows a puff of air into the blob of glass. The air expands and the blob of glass blows up like a balloon. The glassblower uses tools to press the glass into shape before it cools and hardens. If the glass cools too much, the glassblower uses a furnace to heat it up again. The glassblower often needs help to finish the piece of glass.

When it is finished, the glass must be cooled. If glass cools too quickly it shatters, so the glass is placed in an oven which cools the glass slowly over a whole day and a night.

*****

Here’s an informative web site that explains more about the history of glass and the glass creation process.

Charles Town, West Virginia – Charles Town Races & Slots is getting ready to turn up the lights, roll out the red carpet and introduce a new name and new features to accompany the launch of table games in July. When the first dice roll, the West Virginia gaming and entertainment facility, owned by Penn National Gaming, will be renamed Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races.

Charles Town Races & Slots General Manager Al Britton, unveiled the new name and plans for upgrades at the gaming facility at a luncheon for community partners, many of whom were instrumental in supporting the addition of table games.

In July 2010, Charles Town Races & Slots will introduce table games to a newly-renovated casino floor and be renamed Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races.

“Hollywood is a great brand that Penn National Gaming has successfully introduced in other markets around the country,” said Britton. “Our new name underscores the expanded Hollywood décor, atmosphere, games and entertainment we’re adding to the casino, and it retains the rich tradition of racing that has been part of Charles Town for the last 77 years.”

Renovations are underway to bring the classic style and glamour of 1930s art deco Hollywood to the Charles Town gaming floor along with the latest technology and amenities designed for ultimate guest comfort.

“We’re transforming Charles Town into a Las Vegas-style casino destination,” said Britton. “Guests can expect a more sophisticated and comfortable atmosphere that includes exciting table games along with all of their favorite slot machines, more room to play than ever before and the same outstanding service we deliver every day.”

Guests will be immersed in the Hollywood atmosphere the minute they walk in the door. A giant serpentine video wall projecting first-run movie trailers and video shorts will greet players entering the casino at the valet entrance. Plasma screens and video trees will be added throughout the casino so that guests can enjoy entertainment programming and sporting events while they play.

Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races will feature nine table game areas, including a non-smoking, high roller, and party pit on the casino floor with a total of 85 games, plus a 27-table poker room. Twelve types of table games will be featured: including Blackjack, Craps, Roulette, Mini-Baccarat and Pai Gow Poker.

At the edge of the existing casino floor, a new gaming area is under construction that will feature table games, slots and an exciting new entertainment lounge called Hollywood on the Roof. It will feature a performance stage and giant panoramic screen reminiscent of the Hollywood Bowl. Whether playing a favorite game or enjoying a drink at the large crescent-shaped bar, guests will be able to watch live entertainment on the stage, as well as sports action and music videos on the screen.

Britton said the casino would continue to offer the same number of slot machines throughout the facility – more than 5,000 – as it did prior to the addition of table games.

A noodle bar will be added to the mix of offerings in the casino food court this year and future plans call for the addition of a Final Cut Steakhouse.

To prepare for the introduction of tables games at the casino, approximately four hundred trainees are enrolled in a dealer school operated by Blue Ridge Community & Technical College on property at Charles Town Races & Slots. Of these, 70 percent are West Virginia residents while 40 percent live in Jefferson County.

Charles Town Races & Slots, a Penn National Gaming property, is a world-class entertainment venue offering visitors more than 5,000 slot machines, live and simulcast horse racing and a wide range of food and beverage choices, including the 350-seat Epic Buffet. The historic Charles Town Races has hosted live thoroughbred racing since 1933 and began offering gaming to visitors in 1997. Conveniently located about a one-hour drive from the Baltimore and Washington DC beltways, Charles Town Races & Slots is one of the region’s fastest growing gaming and entertainment destinations with more than four million visitors each year.

Hotel accommodations can be found on property at the Inn at Charles Town, which features 153 comfortable guest rooms including 18 spacious suites that overlook live thoroughbred racing action. Guests can enjoy a complimentary breakfast buffet, wireless internet access and can unwind by taking the complimentary shuttle service to enjoy racing, slot action and dining at one of nine restaurants at Charles Town Races & Slots. The Inn at Charles Town offers a variety of rooms to host business or social functions.

Berryville, VA – Imagine green. Imagine sustainability. Imagine fun. April 22 is Earth Day and to celebrate, join hundreds in the Shenandoah Valley at Valley EarthFest 2010.

This Earth Day-inspired festival is eco-friendly to the max. The festival, now in its third year, continues to grow in popularity. The all-day event will be held in Berryville, Virginia – at Rose Hill Park on Sunday April 18, 2010, beginning at 11 a.m. and running into the evening with a blues concert in the evening.

Valley Earthfest (VEF) 2010 is a family-oriented ZERO WASTE event spotlighting a “Grass Roots Green – Getting Back to Basics” approach to sustainable living. The event offers offering farm-to-fork food, live music, environmental workshops, green vendors, kids events, and more.

Why ZERO WASTE at Valley EarthFest in 2010?

From Valley EarthFest 2010 staff:

“Imagine how difficult it would be to shut down 20 percent of our coal-fired power plants. Now, imagine how much less difficult it would be to divert all biodegradable materials from our landfills and send the materials to compost facilities instead. According to new research by Eco-Cycle, the short-term climate impact is the same.

When biodegradable materials such as paper products, food scraps and yard trimming are tossed in the garbage and sent to the landfill, those lettuce heads, grass clippings and paper boxes don’t just break down as they would in nature or in a compost pile. They decompose anaerobically, without oxygen, and in the process become the number one source of human-caused methane and a major player in climate change.

In fact, methane is now understood to be 72 times more potent than CO2 over a 20-year period. This means our landfills emit the greenhouse gas equivalent of 20 percent of U.S. coal-fired power plants every year.

Current accounting protocols for greenhouse gas emissions fail to address the short-term risks and opportunities of methane (CH4) emissions. Correcting the time horizon – a policy, not scientific decision – launches methane abatement from a climate afterthought to an essential first step forward in the fight against global climate change, and recognizes landfill methane emissions as a source equivalent to 20 percent of U.S. coal-fired power plants.

Based on the data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), we believe keeping organic materials out of the landfill and avoiding potent methane emissions to be the quickest, easiest and cheapest first step for a community to immediately reduce its GHG emissions while working toward longer-term reduction strategies.

How Zero Waste works

It’s simple. We don’t “talk trash” at our events. That’s right , trash cans are off limits. All food and serveware are composted, paper handouts (if any) are sustainably printed and controlled at the event, and reusable EarthFest BPA FREE USA made water bottles are sponsored by Blur Ridge Bridal for donation and we’ll have a water filtering system available for FREE water. Look for the ZERO WASTE ZONE signs and informational kiosks throughout the event.”

Build your own solar dehydrator

Valley Earthfest 2010 will host two workshops this year. One workshop is on how to build a solar dehydrator for your vegetables. Something very simple; costs $10. The other workshop is on how to build a solar furnace for your house. These are all do-it-yourself items, a very back-to-basic approach for how we can use what we have already available to make the earth better.

12:00 pm - Organic? All Natural? When it comes to the meat you’re eating, what’s the difference? at The Blueridge Meats tent in the Farmers Market

2:00 pm – Solar Electric at Main Street Architects Building

The kids will love the eco-friendly focus

Kids are on their own turf when it comes to green living. Valley EarthFest welcomes back the Green Sprouts Children’s Learning Tent sponsored by Mountain Media Systems. (Be sure to check out Jake the Snake.)

They’ll also be face painting for the young ones, as well as a Gnome Decorating Contest. (Last year’s winner was Vinnie the Earth Activist gnome.)

Music goes green!

Terry Oates and The Mudcats will be the headliner for Valley Earthfest 2010. They’ll play at 7 p.m. on Sunday night, April 18. Also enjoy all of the other talented musicians during the daylight hours.

Terry Oates and the Mudcats is an eight-piece blues band based on traditional blues influences with a modern flair. As they explain to listeners: “We try to draw inspiration from the original greats such as BB King, Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters, and many others in our original material while trying to pay homage to these icons of the blues by playing some of their greatest performances in the way they were originally recorded.”

The concept of our original material has been inspired by discussions on the theory of the blues, concept of recording in the early days, instruments used, and the artist themselves. Terry Oates and the Mudcats have many different influences and backgrounds, giving them a unique perspective to the music.

When people talk about the blues, they usually refer to the style they are most familiar with, but the blues mean different things to different people. After all there are many styles of the blues. There is Chicago blues, Texas blues, Delta blues, and many more variations.

Terry Oates and the Mudcats combination of guitar, bass, drums, horns, harmonica, vocals, and backing vocals give them the ability to cover many styles of the blues. Terry Oates and the Mudcats are new to the scene as a group but their cumulative experience spans decades.

Woodstock, VA – It’s the biggest fund raiser of the year for the Rotary Club of Woodstock, and one of the most popular community events. The Shrimp and Catfish Dinner will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2010, at The National Guard Armory, located at West Hoover Road in Woodstock.

Human beings helping human beings

Professionally-cooked shrimp and fried catfish will be served by Rotarians, with all the fixings. Funds raised will be donated to a variety of local charities. In the past, Rotary has donated to Habitat for Humanity, The Humane Society, Response Inc., The Pregnancy Center, food banks, homeless and emergency shelters, needy children and families, and others.

Shenandoah County banks have joined together in support of the Rotary efforts by becoming official sponsors of the event. Local businesses and individuals are also funding non-profit organizations as sponsors and have signed up as corporate sponsors.

Dessert will be provided by local Culinary Arts students. There will be ongoing 50/50 drawings throughout the afternoon, as well as raffles for handmade quilts, and other Shenandoah Valley items – provided by local arts & crafts guilds. Music will add a festive touch, according to Event Chair, Shelley Schechtel.

The scoop on getting tickets

Tickets are $22.50 for adults, $10 for children ages 5 to 12. Tickets may be purchased from any Rotary member. They are also available at Four Star Printing at 916 South Main Street in Woodstock, or by sending a check to the Rotary Club of Woodstock, P. O. Box 602, Woodstock VA 22664. Adult beverages will be available. Table reservations can be made for 10 or
more people.

“This is an event that is so large in scope that it involves virtually every one of the 70-plus members of our club,” said Woodstock Rotary President Mike Monahan. “We anticipate serving more than the 400 people who dined with us last year.”

The mission of Rotary International is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace. As such, The Rotary Club of Woodstock is a service organization of business and professional men and women who either live or work in the Greater Woodstock area. Members of the club have practiced the principle of “Service Above Self” since the Woodstock club was founded in 1925.

*****

Rotary’s Simple Checklist for Ethical Behavior

Rotary International’s 4-Way Test, has been translated into more than 100 languages, asks the following questions:

Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

The test is one of the hallmarks of Rotary. Since it was developed in 1932 by Herbert J. Taylor, who later became Rotary International president, it has never ceased to be relevant. Its four brief questions are not based on culture or religion. Instead, they are a simple checklist for ethical behavior. They transcend generations and national borders.

According to the Rotary International web site, here’s how the test works:

“As Rotarians, we should have The Four-Way Test in mind in every decision we make, all day long. Our utmost responsibility is to speak the truth, to be fair, to build goodwill and better friendships, and to do our very best in
all situations.

Life is very turbulent today, and people all over the world are exhausted in their duties. Where are the dreams of a better world? Where are we? Who are we? What is our duty to ourselves, neighbors, and fellow citizens? Where are charity and our joint responsibility to humankind?

Now more than ever, we need a vision and knowledge of what is happening around us, a new view of cultural and religious phenomena, without dividing humankind into limited and subjective categories. That’s the tenet for a better world and a job for us Rotarians: not engaging in politics, but serving without any boundaries.”

Washington D.C. – According to the Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies (PEN), nanotechnology policy experts are urging that food additives that contain nanoscale materials be subject to new safety testing to ensure that their use does not pose unintended risks.

The Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies was established in April 2005 as a partnership between the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and the Pew Charitable Trusts. The Project is dedicated to helping ensure that as nanotechnologies advance, possible risks are minimized, public and consumer engagement remains strong, and the potential benefits of these new technologies are realized.

They write: “Our goal is to inform the debate and to create an active public and policy dialogue. It is not an advocate either for, or against, particular nanotechnologies. We seek to ensure that as these technologies are developed, potential human health and environmental risks are anticipated, properly understood, and effectively managed.”

What is Nanotechnology?

Nanotechnology is defined “as the study and use of structures between 1 nanometer and 100 nanometers in size. To give you an idea of how small that is, it would take eight hundred 100 nanometer particles side by side to match the width of a human hair.”

How Does It Relate to My Food?

In their article called “How Nanotechnology Works,” Kevin Bonsor and Jonathan Strickland, explain: “Because elements at the nanoscale behave differently than they do in their bulk form, there’s a concern that some nanoparticles could be toxic.

From HowStuffWorks web site.

Some doctors worry that the nanoparticles are so small, that they could easily cross the blood-brain barrier, a membrane that protects the brain from harmful chemicals in the bloodstream. If we plan on using nanoparticles to coat everything from our clothing to our highways, we need to be sure that they won’t poison us.” See full article.

“The call comes as nanotechnology emerges as a major regulatory challenge facing the Obama Administration. It also takes place amid debate over how to restructure the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and possibly create a separate government food safety agency.”

PEN policy experts – funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts – are urging the FDA to issue guidance on how existing listings for food additives and “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) substances apply to nanoscale materials. This action by FDA would help increase consumer confidence and private-sector investment in new technologies. According to companies that use nanoscale materials in foods, the technology can be used to improve food taste, quality, and safety.

“Failure by FDA to issue any guidance for nano food-additives leaves the door open to manufacturers to make their own judgments and enter the market without FDA clearance, despite having a material with novel properties,” says David Rejeski, the director of PEN. “Clear FDA guidance for nanoscale food-additives combined with a pre-market safety evaluation would provide a level playing field and rules of the road for industry developing new applications based on nanoscale materials.”

Congress created the GRAS concept to build some flexibility into the oversight system by exempting additives that truly were considered safe from the pre-market approval requirement. FDA and industry have used this authority over the years to avoid the food additive approval process for well-tested substances whose safety is recognized by experts.

“The time may come, when the body of scientific evidence demonstrating the safety of a nanoscale food additive is sufficient to meet the GRAS standard. But the science is not close to meeting that level of confidence now,” says Andrew Maynard, chief science advisor for PEN.

For a general discussion of the uses of nanotechnology in food products, visit this web site.

Possible Health Risks From Nanoparticles

In a March 24,2010 article entitled, “Nano Foods Coming To A Store Near You,” Andrew Schneider, the Senior Public Health Correspondent for AOLNews, writes: “Despite the fact that hundreds of peer-reviewed studies have shown that nanoparticles pose potential risk to human health and, more specifically, that when ingested can cause DNA damage that can prefigure cancer and heart and brain disease, officially, the FDA says there aren’t any nano-containing food products currently sold in the U.S.”

Schneider’s research shows that “some of the FDA’s agency’s own safety experts, pointing to scientific studies published in food science journals, reports from foreign safety agencies and discussions in gatherings like the Institute of Food Technologists conference are voicing their concerns.” And indeed, nanomaterials have already arrived in America – and “are causing some big-chain safety managers to demand greater scrutiny of what they’re being offered, especially with imported food and beverages.”

The article says that Latin American packers are spraying U.S.-bound produce with a wax-like nanocoating to extend shelf-life – which has not been tested for possible health effects. Large food retailers in the U.S., including Costco, are reportedly looking more closely at the produce arriving for their shelves. Many fruits, such as cucumbers, apples and pears, are often “being coated with a thin, wax-like nanocoating to extend their shelf-life … and protect the color and flavor of the fruit longer.”

Nanotechnology Applications See Rapid Growth

The worldwide nanotechnology food market is estimated to grow to over $20 billion dollars by the end of this year. An inventory that includes 84 consumer products in the food and beverage sector which are currently available to consumers and which manufacturers claim are nanotechnology, can be found here.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration Nanotechnology web material can be found here.

Final authority for safety testing of nano-foods resides in the White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy and the Office of Management and Budget.

The Organic Alternative to Nano Foods

Many natural grocers, including Maggie’s Organic Grocers in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, are carrying only organic produce, devoid of nanotechnology additives. “Growing ones own food, or buying from local farms is a great way to ensure that what you eat doesn’t contain nano additives which may be harmful,” says Debra Tipton, the owner of the popular store.

Shenandoah County, VA – We must be in control of our own food supply. To save family farms, we need to address how to finance small farms long-term. These issues are of vital importance to our area, and to the world. On April 7, 2010, Shenandoah Forum will hold the second in a series of public forums presenting options for supporting and enhancing the viability and profitability of Shenandoah County’s agricultural base.

The project – dubbed “Farm to Table” – targets Shenandoah County’s diverse farming sector. This includes farming operations of all sizes and types – whether traditional or modern, long standing or new, large or small. It will include programs to assist current and prospective farmers, farms involved in agritourism, as well as our vineyards and wineries, orchards, woodlots and trout farms.

While spotlighting the farming community, the forums are also intended for consumers who value local resources and look for ways to ensure their availability and public officials seeking to realize the Comprehensive Plan’s vision of a rural character and sustainable agricultural future for Shenandoah County.

Shenandoah County ranks fifth in overall agriculture production in Virginia. With an annual gross farm income of more than $100 million, agriculture is the highest earning industry in Shenandoah County and relates closely to the success of other industries, such as tourism, within the county.

A vibrant and healthy agricultural community is vital to the strength, health and future of Shenandoah County and the Forum believes that developing a strong local food system is key to that vibrancy and health, and an important form of community wealth.

Forums Scheduled for March and April

The project began in March and will continue in April, with a series of two free public forums (i.e., two-hour evening programs that address the long-term financing options for farms.)

Forum #1: Extending the Season: Long-term Planning Options
Date: Already held on Thursday, March 18, 2010

“You Can Buy the Family Farm But Remember I Still Own It”

Speaker: Dr. Ron Hanson, Department of Agricultural Economics, University of Nebraska

Dr. Hanson is a widely-traveled national speaker on the importance of family relationships and the future of the family farm. Dr. Hanson’s presentation “You Can Buy the Family Farm But Remember I Still Own It” identifies and discusses issues confronting succession of a family-owned farm business.

This humorous and motivating message is filled with “true to life” anecdotes to help families work through the process of moving America’s agriculture to the next generation — vital to the future of our economy and our society.

Fall 2010 E- Shenandoah Forum Events –

Watch for more information:

The third in the Shenandoah Forum 2010 “Farm to Table” Series, entitled “To Market, To Market” will be held in September. It will focus on effective marketing approaches and adding value to existing agricultural products.

For this all-day event, local producers and businesses will be invited to set up vendor booths, participate on panel discussions, and contribute to a locally-sourced lunch. Speakers will address topics such as current commodity markets and changing market demands. In addition, smaller break-out sessions are planned on topics such as direct farm sales, farmers’ markets, community-supported agriculture and agritourism, and food security.

A final celebratory event, “Reaping the Harvest: A Celebration of the Land and Its Bounty,” also planned for September will be a fundraiser dinner to augment the Valley’s” Buy Fresh, Buy Local” campaign and will feature locally-grown and prepared foods.

The goal of the series is to better understand how we can achieve a more secure future for our community through a locally sustainable food system that creates more profitable farming practices and more informed choices for healthy living.

2010 Music Line-up

The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival is proud to announce that its 21st Annual Envoy Bluegrass Festival has yet another unforgettable line-up.

The Martha White Bluegrass Express bus will be returning this year; and Rhonda Vincent & The Rage will be making an encore appearance, reprising their headline status that set modern Festival attendance records in 2008.

The Festival will host the return of Rhonda Vincent and her band, The Rage. Rhonda’s powerful vocals have earned her the IBMA award for Female Vocalist of the Year an incredible 7 times. However, that doesn’t even scratch the surface of her accomplishments and awards, including being a multiple Grammy nominee. Called “The New Queen of Bluegrass”, she maintains a rigorous tour schedule and has one of the most talented bands in the business.

Last year, Rounder Records released Rhonda’s most recent project, “Destination Life”. This album presents the Bluegrass Queen and her Court, at the top of their game. Rhonda Vincent & The Rage are undeniably one of the most popular groups in bluegrass today.

Also featured this year will be the legendary and highly-entertaining Lonesome River Band. The line-up continues with the traditional, yet original sound of Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice. The Dixie Bee-Liners will bring variety to the proceedings with their contemporary sound and soulful voices. Rounding out the program is CoalTown, an up-and-coming band with dynamic vocals. Festival Organizers feel that this line-up is certain to provide a day of entertainment the whole family will enjoy.

The show will be held in its usual location, under the newly-remodeled Sprint Tent on the campus of the Winchester Medical Center. The date of the concert is Sunday May 2, 2010, from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.

The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival’s® Envoy of Winchester Bluegrass Festival is also sponsored by Coors Light and Navy Federal Credit Union. Tickets go on sale at the Festival Store on Friday, March 19, 2010.

*****

What is the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival?

A series of more than thirty events includes: band competitions, dances, parades, the Clyde Beatty – Cole Bros Circus, a 10K Race, the Coronation of Queen Shenandoah, Firefighters’ events, and celebrities. The Festival is an event the whole family can enjoy.

The Festival is held in Winchester – Frederick County Virginia, in the beautiful and historic Northern Shenandoah Valley, just 75 miles west of Washington, D.C. A small city with a rural atmosphere, Winchester is within easy driving time from Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, PA, Baltimore, MD and Richmond, VA. Crowds in excess of 250,000 attend the Festival each year.

What is the Big Read?
The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts, in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest, designed to revitalize the role of literary reading in American popular culture. Reading at Risk: A Survey of Literary Reading in America, a 2004 NEA report, identified a critical decline in reading for pleasure among American adults.

The Big Read addresses this issue by bringing communities together to read, discuss, and celebrate books and writers from American and world literature.

The WV Book Faire, in conjunction with the Martinsburg-Berkeley County Public Libraries, is pleased to announce the 2010 book selection for our local The Big Read event is The Call of the Wild by Jack London. The Library staff encourages people to visit the Library to reserve a copy or to purchase a copy for yourself.

The Call of the Wild
Jack London’s The Call of the Wild is a singular classic. It is a great novel that can be appreciated by readers of all ages, as well as a philosophical book that provides an action-packed adventure. Oddest of all, it is an experimental novel (half of the characters are canine, including the hero) that is a thrilling pleasure to read. No wonder this American novel has never lacked readers — both here and abroad.

Abducted from his comfortable home and sold as a sled dog, Buck battles the elements to become leader of the pack. This struggle for survival is an unforgettable adventure.

The WV Book Faire Edible Book Contest

Let your imagination and culinary talents go wild with the WV Book Faire Edible Book Contest. To participate, create a piece of edible art related to books – whether be fiction, nonfiction, plays, poetry, or any genre you choose. Entries must have something to do with the book, such as a scene, character, or cover.

The Special Guest Judge for the Edible Book Contest is Chef Roland Mesnier, the former White House Pastry Chef. The Edible Book Contest is being held on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at Blue Ridge Community & Technical College, 400 W. Stephen St. in downtown Martinsburg.
Richmond, VA – Hey kids! Eat those veggies for your school lunch! Especially if they’re grown just down the street! During the 2010 Virginia General Assembly Session, House Joint Resolution 95 (HJ95), introduced by Delegate Edward Scott representing Culpeper, Madison and Orange County, Virginia, officially establishing a “Virginia Farm-to-School Week” was passed with unanimous consent by both the House of Delegates and Senate.

Besides establishing a Virginia Farm-to-School Week during the second week of November, HJ95 recognizes the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Virginia Department of Education, Virginia Food System Council, and Virginia Farm-to-School Work Group for their many contributions to help develop, promote, and implement Virginia’s Farm-to-School Program.

“This is a beginning step in changing the quality of school nutrition while providing economic opportunities for our farming community and strengthening farm-to-table connections throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia,” said Christopher Carpenter, Special Projects Coordinator for Washington & Lee University, and Vice-Chair of the Virginia Food System Council.

In 2009, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Virginia Department of Education and Virginia Farm-to-School Work Group coordinated the first Farm-to-School Week, where all regions of Virginia participated. Thirty-six different locally grown Virginia foods were featured as healthy choices on school menus across the state.

School districts including Madison County, Rappahannock County, Harrisonburg City and Goochland County all participated as part of the initial Week and featured school lunches made from local farm products.

“Virginia’s Farm-to-School Program is a true “win-win”. Our students benefit from being served fresh, local food at school. These same schools represent a significant new market opportunity for Virginia farmers. It is my pleasure to bring this resolution before the General Assembly and to call attention to Farm-to-School Week in the Commonwealth,” said Delegate Ed Scott.

In 2007, recognizing the problems associated with childhood obesity and the search to open additional markets for fresh farm products in Virginia, the General Assembly passed Senate Joint Resolution 347, which requested that the Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry and the Secretary of Education establish a similar Farm-to-School Task Force to develop a plan for implementing a Farm-to-School Program in the Commonwealth.

By the numbers
Since then, there has been a 300 percent increase in locally grown foods served in public and private schools. Virginia public schools serve 681,505 lunches daily to nourish their students, resulting in more than 122 million lunches served during a 180-day school year.

If only 25 cents per day per student lunch is devoted to purchasing locally grown Virginia farm products, a total of $170,376 would be generated daily and more than $30.7 million would be reinvested annually in Virginia communities and the economy.

Virginia Wine Week promotes restaurants and wine shops who offer Virginia wine for sale by the glass.

- “Virginia Wine Week is an exciting new partnership to expand local wine offerings in our restaurants and shops,” said Annette Boyd, Director of the Virginia Wine Marketing Office.

- “As Virginia’s reputation for wine excellence continues to grow, so does demand for our product. Wine lovers now have a new reason to get out and enjoy the success of the Virginia wine industry.”

- “Visitors to Virginia want to experience local history, culture and of course – local food and wine,” said Alisa Bailey, President and CEO of the Virginia Tourism Corporation. “It’s important for visitors to find local wine on menus in Virginia’s restaurants and Virginia Wine Week will help encourage that.”

Do you know?
Virginia is home to more than 155 wineries across the state in nine different wine producing regions. The state is getting national recognition for several varietals including Viognier, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot; and it is producing a growing variety of wines quickly gaining a loyal following including Bordeaux styles blends, sparkling wines and the native varietal Norton.

Virginia was named one of the top five up-and-coming wine destinations by Travel + Leisure magazine in 2007.
